Nieder-Erlenbach has been the northernmost district and local district of Frankfurt am Main since August 1, 1972 .

Geographical location

Nieder-Erlenbach, founded as a cluster village , is located in the southern foothills of the Wetterau on the Erlenbach of the same name , right tributary of the Nidda . The Frankfurt Hauptwache is about 9 kilometers away, Bad Vilbel (town hall) about 2.5 kilometers. Petterweil is 3 km to the north. After Dortelweil the east there are just as after Frankfurt-Nieder-Eschbach km to the west about second Frankfurt-Harheim is in the southwest and Massenheim in the southeast - each 2 km away.

history

middle Ages

The oldest surviving mention of the place as Arilbach (Erlenbach) comes from 779 and from the Lorsch Codex : a woman Meginburc donated the Lorsch monastery with all of her property there. In addition to agricultural land, farm buildings and houses, there were also four serfs. Nieder-Erlenbach was after this entry in Gau Wettereiba (Wetterau).

From 1376 the imperial city of Frankfurt am Main ruled Nieder-Erlenbach. The town was also able to occupy the mayor and lay judges' offices according to the right of village rule conferred by Charles IV . In 1401 the king once again explicitly ordered the Nieder-Erlenbachers to obey Frankfurt. The reason for this arrangement has not been handed down, but does not suggest that the villagers had a great love for their urban rule. The officials deployed by Frankfurt subsequently called themselves (from 1403 at the latest) burgraves.

Modern times

The particular law of Nieder-Erlenbach was particularly nested: Here was the 16th century the Frankfurter Reformation and multistage subsidiary the Solmser Land Law and the Common Law . This remained with the transition to the Grand Duchy of Hesse so and did not change until 1 January 1900, when the same across the whole German Reich applicable Code Civil entered into force and replaced the Partikularrechte.

In the 17th century Nieder-Erlenbach was largely destroyed twice by devastating fires (1602 and 1677).

After the establishment of the Free City of Frankfurt , the Nieder-Erlenbachers were represented by a deputy in the legislative body from 1823 , but it was not until 1853 that the villagers received universal suffrage. In 1866 Prussia occupied the Free City of Frankfurt after the German War and gave Nieder-Erlenbach to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in the peace treaty of September 3, 1866 . Here it was now in the province of Upper Hesse .

Nieder-Erlenbach remained an independent municipality in the Friedberg district until it was incorporated into Frankfurt am Main together with Harheim and Nieder-Eschbach on August 1, 1972 as part of the regional reform in Hesse by virtue of state law . Previously, a merger with five neighboring communities to form the Eschbachtal community had failed.

Population development, social situation

Dates are only known since the 19th century. In 1815 Nieder-Erlenbach had 556 inhabitants. In 1900 the population grew to 1900, then to 1500 in 1950. In 2010 there are around 4500 and the population is 000000000004682.00000000004,682. Nieder-Erlenbach has an above-average social stratification, in this still rural area the proportion of homeowners is particularly high and with only around 1.3 percent unemployed (2012), the lowest level is recorded in Frankfurt.
