preparation

In October, the Swedes played for the first time against Iran , whose women were playing for the first time in Europe, and won 7-0, with all goals coming in the first half. Magdalena Eriksson and Olivia Schough scored three goals each and were substituted off in the second half. Three days later they only came to a goalless draw with neighboring Norway . Norway was then also the first of two test match opponents during a training camp in January 2017 on the Spanish Mediterranean coast, where the Scandinavian teams traditionally prepare. The Swedes started the European Championship year with a 1: 2. With a 0-0 win against England , another European Championship participant on January 24, the training camp was concluded. In March, the participation in the Algarve Cup was on the program again, where EM hosts Netherlands (0: 1) as well as Australia (1: 0) and China (0: 0) were the opponents in the group stage. As third in the group, the Swedes only had to play for 7th place, which meant the worst result in the history of the Algarve Cup. The placement game was then won 4-0 against the European Championship finals opponents Russia . On April 6, the Swedes lost in Trelleborg against Olympic third Canada with 0: 1, who three days later also played against the European Championship group opponent Germany and lost with 1: 2. One month before the European Championship finals, the Swedes played in Gothenburg on June 8th against world champions USA and lost 1-0, with Kosovare Asllani making their 100th international match. On June 13, they then won 1-0 against EM newcomer Scotland in Växjö . On July 8th, the dress rehearsal for the EM against Mexico followed , which also ended with a 1-0 victory.

The Van der Valk Hotel Duiven bij Arnhem A12 was based in the Netherlands .

In the draw on November 8, 2016, Sweden was assigned to Pot 2. Sweden was drawn into group B and will face defending champions and Olympic champions Germany in the first game of the only group without a newcomer to the European Championship , then Italy and Russia . So far, there have been four wins against Russia in four games, three of them in the European Championship preliminary rounds in 1997, 2001 and 2009, the last encounter so far. The record against Italy is also positive: in 21 games there were 15 wins, four draws and only two defeats. The last time they met was on July 16, 2013 in the last European Championship preliminary round and Sweden won 3-1. The last defeat against Italy was on June 26, 2004 in qualifying for the EM 2005 when the Swedes were already qualified. Against Germany, however, the balance is negative: in 26 games there were seven wins and 19 defeats. The last game between the two was the final at the 2016 Olympics , which Sweden lost 2-1. The last win against Germany was on March 4, 2015 in the first group game of the Algarve Cup 2015 , when the Swedes were able to convert a 0-2 deficit into a 4-2 win. A week later they lost the game for third place with 1: 2 and three months later they also lost the World Cup round of 16 against Germany (1: 4).

The first final match in Group A ended against Germany in a 0-0 draw, which meant the first draw between these two teams after 27 games.
