The German team reached a World Cup final for the second time by defeating the Soviet Union. The goals were scored by the two best German players of the tournament: Helmut Haller in the 43rd minute, Franz Beckenbauer increased to 2-0 in the 68th minute. The subsequent goal of the USSR in the 88th minute by Porkujan came too late. After Igor Tschislenko was sent off in the 44th minute, Germany played in the majority.

In the 200th game in World Cup history, hosts England met West Germany. The German team took the lead through Helmut Haller in the 12th minute, Geoff Hurst equalized six minutes later. In the 78th minute, England took the lead through Martin Peters, before Wolfgang Weber equalized in stoppage time. In extra time, Geoff Hurst first scored the controversial Wembley goal in the 101st minute, then the decisive 4-2. England had become world champions for the first and, for the time being, last time.
