Group games

In Group D, the Australians met the South American champions 2010 and vice world champions Brazil in their first game . Australia started briskly and had a first chance to score in the 6th minute. As a result, Australia became overweight and barely allowed the more highly rated Brazilians to come into play. At the end, however, the matiladas lacked accuracy. Australia also had more of the game in the second half, but surprisingly in the 54th minute, the 1-0 for Brazil fell through Rosana , who was able to prevail in the penalty area against several Australians. Until the end of the game, the Australians pressed for the equalizer, but could not use even the best chances. It was the sixth defeat - in three wins - against Brazil for the Australians.

In their second game, the Australians met for the first time on the runner-up of the African Cup of Nations of 2010 and World Cup newcomer Equatorial Guinea . The Australian coach had changed the entire right side of his team and replaced the captain and goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri with Lydia Williams . The new captain was Collette McCallum , who distributed the balls wisely in midfield and was also very dangerous with free kicks. From the start, the Matildas put the World Cup newcomer under pressure and in the 8th minute Leena Khamis was able to dust off when the goalkeeper of Equatorial Guinea could not hold the ball. In the following period Australia pushed for the 2-0 and they were unlucky that the Hungarian referee Gyöngyi Gaál overlooked Bruna in the 16th minute when a ball that had bounced off the post was picked up. But the 1-1 equalizer came as a complete surprise when Genoveva Añonma was able to take the ball from Australian defender Servet Uzunlar and play Williams away. Substitute Lisa De Vanna in particular caused a stir in front of the goal of the Africans in the second half and scored the 3-1 in the 51st minute after Emily van Egmond had made it 2-1 three minutes earlier. After that Australia administered the game, McCallum was substituted and the game of the World Cup newcomer became "Nigerian". Shortly before the end it got exciting again when Añonma again took the ball from Uzunlar and scored the 2: 3 goal. Australia brought this result over time and could now reach the quarter-finals with a win or a draw against former world champions Norway .

Australia have played four times against Norway (1 draw, 3 defeats). Tom Sermanni had changed his starting line-up again in a few positions. a. The captain Melissa Barbieri was back in goal and Lisa De Vanna and Kyah Symon were back in the starting line-up. No goals were scored in the first half even if both teams had some chances. At half-time, Norway had to replace the goalkeeper who had stretched her foot in the 30th minute. Furthermore, initially no compelling scoring opportunities developed on either side. It was not until the 56th minute that Elise Thorsnes gave Norway a 1-0 lead after a defensive mistake by the Australians, but Kyah Simon was able to equalize to 1-1 straight away . After that, both teams had a chance to win the game. This was then achieved by Kyah Simon in the 87th minute, who had already made it 1-1. With this first win against Norway, Australia has qualified for the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the second time.

Quarter finals

As runners-up, Australia met Sweden , the group winners of Group C , in the quarter-finals in Augsburg on July 10th . So far, there have been eight games between Australia and Sweden. Australia won only once, two games ended in a draw, Australia won one on penalties and Sweden won five times, most recently in the quarter-finals of the Athens Olympic Games .

Again the Swedes were able to prevail. The Swedish record national player Therese Sjögran scored the 1-0 in the 11th minute, and Lisa Dahlkvist scored her third World Cup goal five minutes later . Ellyse Perry , who was used for the first time, made it exciting again in the 40th minute when she hit the 1: 2 goal with a shot from the corner of the penalty area into the corner of the goal. Seven minutes after the change, Lotta Schelin , the player of the game, made it 3-1. She got a back pass from Kim Carroll and also played goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri . She was lucky in the 80th minute when she almost jumped into her own goal on a cross from the left with the bakk, but was stopped by the post just before the line. Australia then lacked the ideas to turn the tide again.

As in 2007, Australia was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
