gloria.tv is a Catholic-traditionalist website that was founded in 2005 and has been operated anonymously since 2014. It is operated as a video portal and internet television . Sections of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany and Switzerland have clearly distanced themselves from the portal since 2013 or ended their cooperation or support after the Holocaust there was denied and Catholic bishops were insulted.

Self-presentation

According to its own presentation in the imprint , gloria.tv is strictly based on Catholic teaching. The website stands up especially for the expansion, preservation and promotion of the Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic faith as well as for the right to life of unborn and disabled as well as old and sick people and for the preservation of family and marriage .

Since 2014, the operators have been calling gloria.tv a "private initiative that is not directly linked to the church hierarchy". In the new legal notice, the operators are no longer named, the address given is an address in the USA .

Concept and content

In terms of content, gloria.tv is close to Catholic traditionalism and the right-wing extremist blog kreuz.net, which went offline in December 2012 .

An editorially prepared news program is published every working day under the title Gloria Global . In addition, editorial articles appear irregularly on current, predominantly church-political topics.

Users with user accounts can create articles themselves on gloria.tv and upload text, image, audio or video files. You can also comment on your own and third-party contributions, contact one another via email and create individually designed user profiles. The website is available in numerous language versions that can be accessed via subdomains .

Operator and authors

Two and six female employees were named by gloria.tv itself. Nina Buzut is registered as administrator and technical contact person in the Moldovan city of Bălți . The company Dodalu SRL , registered at its address, is the registrar of the domain name gloria.tv.

The owner of the operating company GTVP authorized to sign is Doina Buzut from Moldova. The Swiss priest Reto Nay , a former kreuz.net author and until March 13, 2013 parish administrator of Tujetsch in the diocese of Chur , is a co-founder, active employee, authorized signatory and sole authorized signatory of the operating company. Their headquarters are in the house of the mother of the sole proprietor, Adelina Nay, in Ilanz .

The DNS and Web server are not from since March 16, 2013 web host Metanet in Zurich , but by the company Cloudflare operated, whereby the server location is obscured by gloria.tv. In April 2013, blogger Florian Strankowski determined the web hosts Voxility and Leaseweb used for hosting and published access numbers from gloria.tv based on the number of visitors.

Numerous contributions on gloria.tv appear anonymously or under fictitious user names . Many articles signed by name come from Markus Doppelbauer, a Roman Catholic priest incardinated in the Archdiocese of Vaduz , who is also a technical assistant at gloria.tv. Some reports relate directly to contributions in right-wing extremist or right-wing populist media.

Since the spring of 2013, the headquarters of gloria.tv has been located in the former Viennese outdoor studio of Internet television in Leopoldstadt , Vienna , where it shares the house with a chapel of the Archdiocese of Vienna and a branch of Human Life International .

history

2005-2009

The website went live on October 23, 2005. Shortly after the website was founded, the Bishop of Chur , Vitus Huonder, supported gloria.tv with a letter of recommendation.

On January 22nd, 2009, a user comment that played down the Holocaust was published on gloria.tv . Nay refused to delete the comment to the church newspaper of the Diocese of Linz on the grounds that it “needed the entire Catholic spectrum”. The media law expert Walter Berka stated that there was a serious suspicion of a violation of the law prohibiting National Socialist re- employment. Nay stated that Austrian or German law was not relevant for gloria.tv, as the website was registered in Moldova . A video in which the then Bishop of the Pius Brotherhood Richard Williamson denied the Holocaust was also published on gloria.tv.

2010–2012

In 2011, a lawsuit brought by gloria.tv against the diocese of Linz and Matthäus Fellinger, editor of the Linzer Kirchenzeitung, for alleged damage to its reputation was finally dismissed. Fellinger had accused gloria.tv of using material from Austrian television without permission and of having put the server in Moldova on the level of child porn sites. Since gloria.tv refused to pay the legal costs, the diocese of Linz initiated seizure proceedings against the operator.

On February 3, 2012, gloria.tv reported on an undercover campaign by pro-life supporters. The abortion opponents had therefore checked in October 2011 with the help of a private detective whether Catholic clinics in Cologne prescribed the morning-after pill. The gloria.tv presenter Eva Doppelbauer called the names of the gynecologists who recommended emergency practices to the pseudo patient, where doctors “from the orbit of the abortion company Pro Familia ” worked “in a denunciation style” . After an author from kreuz.net had informed the Archdiocese of Cologne about this, two rape victims were denied treatment and evidence preservation in Catholic hospitals in Cologne in December 2012 .

2013

On February 18, 2013, the English version of gloria.tv showed pictures of German bishops with swastikas because they had allowed the morning-after pill in the hospitals of their dioceses. The German Bishops' Conference explicitly distanced itself from the website and announced that in future content from the church website kirche.tv may no longer be used by gloria.tv. The television editors of the Diocese of Würzburg had already deleted their channel on gloria.tv in mid-January . The daily blessing, which was produced under the care of the German Bishops' Conference, had to be removed from gloria.tv on February 20, 2013 following a prohibition order from the Catholic television work center. Burkhard Hose, pastor of the Catholic university community in Würzburg , filed a criminal complaint against gloria.tv for using symbols of unconstitutional organizations .

On February 20, 2013, Bishop Huonder urged Nay to remove the offensive website from gloria.tv. As a result, Nay claimed that he was not responsible for the English-language texts and that he could not remove them. According to the diocese spokesman Giuseppe Gracia, the bishop did not feel entitled to take any further steps. At the same time, Bishop Huonder emphasized that employees in his diocese should not spread or support any defamatory or inflammatory ideas. However, Nay's further activity for gloria.tv was not prohibited.

On February 21, 2013, the Süddeutsche Zeitung accused gloria.tv of celebrating homophobic network activists with anti-Semitic tendencies.

In March 2013, gloria.tv insulted reporters from Spiegel TV who had researched the video portal in Switzerland as "stalkers" and accused them of Nazi methods ; gloria.tv used the swastika again, this time combined with the Spiegel TV logo. Previously, there had been fights between gloria.tv employees, including Reto Nay, and the Spiegel TV team in several places in Graubünden. On March 11, 2013, the Bishop of Chur, Vitus Huonder, requested the headquarters of gloria.tv to delete all files associated with him from the website. On March 12, 2013 the Tujetsch community president Pancranzi Berther demanded the dismissal of Nays by the local bishopric if the priest did not resign from his work at gloria.tv and clearly distance himself from its activities. Berther added that his village did not want to be “a nest of extremists ”. On the same day there was a violent attack by three employees from gloria.tv on a camera team from RTL , in which one employee of the camera team was slightly injured.

On March 13, 2013, Markus Doppelbauer, a priest incardinated in the Archdiocese of Vaduz in Liechtenstein and a technical employee of gloria.tv, was expelled from the Diocese of Chur by Bishop Huonder and asked to end his pastoral work in the diocese. Huonder had turned to the Vaduz Archbishop Wolfgang Haas on this matter . On the evening of the same day, Reto Nay was dismissed without notice from the Tujetsch parish. The diocese of Chur asked him to resign immediately from his work as pastor; otherwise the missio canonica would be withdrawn from him.

In March 2013, the Graubünden cantonal police initiated an investigation in connection with gloria.tv. It was not disclosed which criminal offenses were involved and whether the use of swastikas would be used to investigate a violation of the racism penal norm . On March 15, 2013, Nay was also removed from office by Bishop Huonder. Nay stated on gloria.tv that this was due to a "witch hunt". Since March 16, 2013, the server location of gloria.tv has been concealed by hosting at Cloudflare . According to a message from the parish office in Sedrun , Nay disappeared on March 14, 2013 and has not been found or reached since then. Even after that he remained in hiding. Doina Buzut and Markus Doppelbauer temporarily disappeared from the public without a trace, gloria.tv was temporarily not available.

In Liechtenstein , Alexander Batliner , President of the Progressive Citizens' Party , asked Archbishop Haas to explain whether he would distance himself from Pastor Doppelbauer's work for gloria.tv. The planned concordat between Liechtenstein and the Holy See , which entitles the archbishopric to residence permits for all employees, must also be questioned. He does not want Liechtenstein to offer shelter to people who advocate such ideas.

In Gloria Global of March 19, 2013, the portal argued that the election of Pope Francis meant an open break with the pontificate of his predecessor Benedict XVI. On April 8, 2013 Doina Buzut appeared again on gloria.tv, Markus Doppelbauer was seen in the Vienna subway in mid-April 2013 . Also in April 2013, Reto Nay preached again on gloria.tv and contacted the diocese of Chur, but his whereabouts remained unknown.

In the course of a house search by the Austrian police against gloria.tv and kreuz.net , the computer from kreuz.net was confiscated in August 2013. The apartments of two priests working on gloria.tv in Upper Austria and Vienna were searched; both were accused of participating in right-wing , homophobic and anti-Semitic articles. A priest's sister allegedly tried to prevent the police from taking a computer with them, injuring a police officer. As the only employee in the priesthood, gloria.tv named Markus Doppelbauer and Reto Nay, as the fourth employee, the priest sister Eva Doppelbauer. The Feldkirch public prosecutor's office confirmed on August 12, 2013 that they had ordered the searches and later transferred the case to the local public prosecutor's office because of the crime scene in Vienna. On the same day the Belgian Bishops' Conference confirmed that both priests were employees of both kreuz.net and gloria.tv and that they were not incardinated in any diocese . The suspects received criminal charges but remained at large. The Berlin public prosecutor's office also launched an investigation against the operators of gloria.tv.

In August 2013, the public prosecutor's office in the canton of Graubünden suspended its investigations into criminal offenses in accordance with the racism penal norm as well as interference with freedom of religion and worship; the authority saw no need for action for a criminal investigation. The investigations into illegal work and residence in Switzerland without the necessary permit , however, continued. The investigations stopped in Graubünden were taken over by the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office. On August 29, 2013 the name "gloria.tv" was removed from the name of the operating company; Doina Buzut and Reto Nay remained authorized to sign or the sole authorized signatory.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the two priests who work on gloria.tv in Austria for being re-employed by the National Socialists.

2014

Reto Nay remained in hiding in 2014, but continued to publish sermons on gloria.tv. On July 3, 2014, the press spokesman for the Diocese of Essen , Ulrich Lota, named gloria.tv as an “echo room” for right-wing extremist believers within the Roman Catholic Church. Such people should not be allowed to determine the public image of the Church. In its press release on the same day, the diocese described gloria.tv and kreuz.net as websites for “Christian hate preachers ” and compared the operators with jihadists and Islamists .

In the same year, the anti-Semitic cult around Anderl von Rinn , a Tyrolean child allegedly murdered by Jews , was advertised on gloria.tv . In autumn 2014, gloria.tv was deleted from the Wayback Machine internet archive and further archiving of the website was prevented.

2015-2017

According to information from gloria.tv, Nay was working on a gloria.tv reader trip on the Greek island of Patmos . In December 2015, Eva Doppelbauer stated that she had not yet received the six computers and several hard drives confiscated by the police in the summer of 2013, despite a court order.

In 2017, gloria.tv spread fake news about the German Chancellor Angela Merkel , who put the phrase “Germans must accept violence from foreigners” in their mouth. The post reached over 270,000 interactions before it was deleted.

2018

As of January 2018, gloria.tv stated the city of Dover (Delaware) in the USA as the seat and a company called Church Social Media Inc. as the carrier . In March 2018, a video by right-wing extremist Martin Sellner appeared on gloria.tv in which he incorrectly referred to the Berlin beverage company Thomas Henry as a sponsor of the identity movement observed by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution . Although Sellner had signed a cease and desist declaration and deleted the video from YouTube , it remained available on gloria.tv.

In September 2018, the former Green politician Karl Öllinger brought a statement of the facts to gloria.tv because of hatred and degradation of homosexuals at the Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office. At the same time he demanded information from the Austrian judiciary about what previous investigations against gloria.tv and kreuz.net had revealed.

In the run-up to the state elections in Bavaria in 2018 , gloria.tv shared three campaign speeches by Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) on YouTube , one by Björn Höcke and two by Alice Weidel . The German Bishops' Conference once again distanced itself from gloria.tv and declared that it was in no way involved in the website.
