Season course
The league season began on October 4, 1986 and ended on April 11, 1987 with the 18th matchday. The ten participating teams met each other in home and away games. The SC Empor Rostock was able to defend last year's title success and celebrate his tenth championship in handball men. The most stubborn opponents were ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt , who had been in the lead until matchday 13, but gambled them away in the two subsequent games against their direct opponents with a defeat in Magdeburg and a draw at home against Rostock, and SC Magdeburg , who on the last matchday with a win in Rostock could still become champions. Rostock also made this game victorious and only gave up one point in the second half of the season when they were drawn in Frankfurt. As usual, all sports clubs took the first five places, followed by SG Dynamo Halle-Neustadt as the best syndicate . With SG Stahl Brandenburg / Kirchmöser and BSG Mining Lamp Zwickau , as in the previous year, the first division newcomers had to relegate.
