The 5th men's handball world championship was held from March 6th to 15th, 1964 in Czechoslovakia . A total of 16 teams competed . For the first time, the FRG and the GDR provided their own teams at this tournament . Romania became world champion with a 25:22 win in the final against Sweden . The Federal Republic of Germany finished fourth, while the GDR was eliminated in the preliminary round.

In the preliminary round, the teams competed in four groups with four teams each. The two best placed in each group qualified for the main round, the third and fourth placed were eliminated.
