The founding of the Austrian Handball Federation (ÖHB) in Vienna on January 25, 1925 can be described as the actual hour of birth .

However, as early as 1926 there was a political split. Clubs belonging to the workers ' sports associations resigned and played their own workers' championships for men and women. The worker handball players and also other branches such as athletics, swimming, weight training and gymnastics were extremely strong and well organized. This made it possible to organize a Workers' Olympiad in Vienna , which coincided with the opening of the Vienna Stadium . Austria won the handball final against Germany in front of around 60,000 spectators 10: 9.

In 1934 the workers' sports associations and clubs were officially dissolved. Other sports associations such as the ÖHB succeeded him, who was able to manage the sports business for the first time.

After the end of the Second World War, the workers' sports association and some civil associations jointly rebuilt the handball association system from May 1946, initially in Vienna and later in the federal states, followed by the sports union in 1947 .

The ÖHB currently has around 17,500 individual members in almost 110 clubs.

He has been a member of the IHF since 1946 and of the EHF since its founding in 1991.

The highlights in the history of the ÖHB were the hosting of the last field handball world championship in history in 1966 and the men's European championships in 2010 and 2020.
