Neckenmarkt ( Hungarian : Sopronnyék , Croatian : Lekindrof ) is a market town in the Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland in Austria .

geography

Geographical location

The market town is located in Central Burgenland.

Like its neighboring communities ( Deutschkreutz and Horitschon ), Neckenmarkt is part of the Blaufränkischland .

Community structure

The municipality includes the following two localities or cadastral municipalities of the same name (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Haschendorf ( Hungarian : Hasfalva , Croatian : Hošindrof ) (158)
  • Neckenmarkt (1530)

history

In the municipality there is a settlement of the oldest linear ceramic tape . It was excavated by Jens Lüning and Eva Lenneis and dates between 5450 and 5050/5000 BC. Chr. (Cal.). Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg .

Later, under the Romans , today's Neckenmarkt was in the province of Pannonia .

Neckenmarkt and Haschendorf (top right) around 1880 (recording sheet of the state survey )

The place was first mentioned in documents in 1279 in a donation of Laurentius Aba to the Cistercian - Klostermarienberg . A castle in Eckendorf is also mentioned .

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Nyék be used. During the First World War, the Sopronnyék prisoner of war camp was located here . After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Neckenmarkt was first mentioned in a document in 1482 as a market town.

On the tourist route to Harka in Hungary. Border crossing point at border sign B 41

Through the municipal structure improvement law of September 1, 1970, Haschendorf and Neckenmarkt were combined to form the new municipality of Neckenmarkt . With an ordinance of January 24, 1973, retroactively from January 1, 1971, Neckenmarkt was granted the right to use the name Marktgemeinde .

On December 1, 2006, a border crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists was  opened on the tourist route leading to Harka (Harkau), Hungary, in accordance with Federal Law Gazette III No. 184/2006 .

Haschendorfer bronze device

The Haschendorfer cult device is one of the most remarkable (and most mysterious) Bronze Age finds in Central Europe. It is a bronze disc with a bronze hoop and a perforated lower part with spoked wheels. It is 27.8 cm high, has a diameter of approx. 41 cm and weighs about 4.7 kg. The original purpose of the device is puzzled. The interpretations range from temple vessels, stools, drums, timpani or gong to bronze crowns. The Haschendorfer bronze device is exhibited in the Liszt Ferenc Museum in Sopron, Hungary.

Regular events

The flag waving in Neckenmarkt: The day of the flag is the Sunday after the Corpus Christi festival . In 1620 the Turks marched against Vienna together with the Transylvanian Prince Gabriel Bethlen . In the Battle of Lackenbach they faced Nikolaus Esterházy with his soldiers and with the support of the imperial cuirassiers . When the farmers in Neckenmarkt heard about it, they set out, armed with flails and scythes, to stand by their landlord. The flag was given to the Neckenmarkters after the victorious battle in 1622.

The flag is entrusted to the unmarried young men. They form the local fraternity . The preparations for waving the flag begin on Whit Monday according to precisely defined rules . The young men choose an ensign from among their number and the other chiefs, the commandant, two constables and two waiters. At the festival they wear the blue uniform, fur hat, catch cords and weapons. The choice of ensign used to be associated with a shooting competition.

The young boys are accepted through the invitation of the two constables. They ask their parents for permission to join the fraternity. The young boys who are invited are called Sterz-bearers because they used to have to provide food and drink.

In the old days there was a separate boys house for the congregation. Now the former community inn, with the large hall, is the place for the gathering and for the celebration. On the evening before, the Burschbaum is set up on the square by the inn . It is the tallest spruce in the forest.

The waiters elected as heads must make provision for the necessary amount of wine. The Robisch stick , a piece of wood adorned with colorful silk ribbons that the waiters put in their boot shafts, reminds us of this special table office . It serves as a notch on which the innkeeper makes a note of the amount of wine served.

In the Corpus Christi Sunday, the lay head of the traditional costume: the black breeches and high boots, a short dark blue red padded jacket which is decorated with light blue Frogging and old big brass buttons and see the white shirt can and a low brown fur hat with dark green Samtdeckel. He wields a historical saber and, as a special ornament, the cartouche , the small silver bag of the cavalry officers with the gilded E of the Esterházy . According to the old privilege, the sergeants and waiters carry guns. These are entirely made of wood. The gun muzzles are only used to put flowers in on the holiday. The ensign's costume includes an apron, a scarf , a shimmering fringed silk scarf , as a special ornament . The entire outfit of the rulers is completed by means of catch cords or dark red cord sashes, also called hussar belts .

Neckenmarkt, roundabout with flag throwers

The ensign girl decorated the flag with flowers and added a silk ribbon with her embroidered name and the year to the flag ribbons. The music is silent while the flag is moving. The ensign and the officers are still belted, they carry their weapons under their arms. You are not yet in office and dignity as protectors of the flag. Only after taking over the flag does the boys' leadership get ready. The first wave of the flag is in honor of the ensign girl. The band plays, then drum rolls sound and the flag is waved three times to the right and also to the left. Waving the flag requires strength and skill.

The flag is then ceremoniously carried to the boys' house. After finishing a piece of march music , a stop for the march in the church is arranged. The band goes ahead, followed by the commanders, the ensign and the boys, all in the same festive clothing. The waiters decide on the boys' move. The volunteer fire brigade and the men's choir also join the parade for the social service. Up until the First World War , all of the craft guilds in the Landsee area also took part in the Corpus Christi parade in Neckenmarkt with their flags. The guild flags were also kept in the parish church of Neckenmarkt. In 1933, 16 guild flags were delivered to the Burgenland State Museum in Eisenstadt.

Heroes are honored at the war memorial. The pastor is then caught up by two watchmen for the church day. The flag is waved three times in front of the rectory. Between the watchmen, the pastor and the whole fraternity move into the church. The fraternity accompanies the handling of the holy of holies. After the Corpus Christi procession, the pastor is escorted home. The flag is waved again. The pageant dissolves at the boys' house.

The boys also raise their flags for the afternoon service. Then the procession follows to the flag mother and then to the mayor. The flag is also waved in her honor. Permission to dance is requested from the mayor. The mush carrier pick for the opening of the dance one the Fähnrichmädl. The other young boys have to guard the flag. After the opening dance, the young boys quietly carry the flag back to the church.

Until 1730 the General Decharge was also carried out during the Corpus Christi procession and a volley was fired during the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. Since then, only dummy rifles have been carried.

In addition to Sunday, the fraternity takes care of the honor guard at church services in uniform on the day of worship. The boys' flag is waved in honor of Neckenmarkt on unusual occasions, such as a bishop's visit or large home festivals. The flag is lowered at the grave of a deceased boy for the final greeting.

In recent times, however, the flag thrower has increasingly become a symbol of the market town. The new school adorns the mosaic picture of the flag thrower with the unfolded flag.
