NGC 4189 = IC 3050 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation areas of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Coma Berenices in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 92 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter . Under the catalog designation VCC 89 it is considered a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4193 , IC 3054 , IC 3059 , IC 3062 .
The Type II supernova SN 1966E was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 8, 1784 .
