NGC 4223 = IC 3102 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 96 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light-years across. The galaxy is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 234 . Together with the dwarf galaxy PGC 39424 , it forms an interacting pair.
The galaxies NGC 4215 , NGC 4235 , NGC 4241 , NGC 4246 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 13, 1784 .
