NGC 4235 = IC 3098 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 104 million light years from the Milky Way and about 135,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 222 . Together with NGC 4246 and NGC 4247 , it forms the galaxy trio Holm 359 .
The galaxies NGC 4223 , NGC 4224 , NGC 4233 , NGC 4241 are located in the same area of the sky .

The object was discovered on January 23, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7-inch telescope and cataloged as NGC 4235 . The IC 3098 entry goes back to the astronomer Arnold Schwassmann , who observed the object on October 30, 1899.
