Küsnacht ( Zurich German Chüsnacht [ˈxʏsnaxt] ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Zurich . It is located on the so-called Gold Coast on the lower right bank of Lake Zurich in the Meilen district and should not be confused with the Schwyz municipality of Küssnacht at the foot of the Rigi .

In 2006, Küsnacht was rated the “most livable city in Switzerland” in a city rating by the magazine Bilanz .

In addition to the village center of Küsnacht, Küsnacht includes the districts of Goldbach in the north and Heslibach in the south on Lake Zurich . The district of Itschnach, situated higher up, borders the community of Zumikon . The Küsnachter hamlets and farms are located at the upper course of the Küsnacht village stream : Küsnachter Berg, Schmalzgrueb, Limberg, Wiserholz, Hohrüti, Wangen, Chaltenstein (Kaltenstein) and the Forch settlement . Neighboring communities besides Zumikon are Zollikon in the north, Erlenbach and Herrliberg in the south and Maur in the east.

  • Area: 1236  ha , of which 28% forest, 35% arable land and meadows, 24% courtyard and garden.

history

The first traces of settlement come from lakeside settlements from the Neolithic Age (4500 to 2300 BC) in the Heslibacher «Hörnli». In Küsnacht Gorge with the Hill of wulp castle remains were found from the later Bronze Age (2300-800 v. Chr.). In 1978, extensive remains of an estate were found on the Küsnachter Allmend , the presumed Latin name of which is fundus Cossiniacus, "Landgut des Cossinius", which is probably the basis of today's place name. This name was among the immigrant in the early Middle Ages Alemanni to Chussennacho recorded in writing and has been in this form for the first time in 1188 in a papal document. In 2018, a burial ground from the 9th to 11th centuries was discovered under the singing hall of the Küsnacht Cantonal School . At the location of the church, which was first documented in 1188, a previous building stood centuries earlier.

In the High Middle Ages (950 to 1250 AD) the rulership rights were exercised by the barons of Regensberg , whose servants had their seat at Wulp Castle. In the 14th century, the Regensbergers sold the Küsnacht rule to the Mülner knightly family , who had risen to the nobility as servants of the Fraumünster Abbey . Also in the 14th century, the Knightly Order of St. John set up its administrative district, the Küsnacht Commandery, near St. George's Church . The last Komtur Konrad Schmid fell in 1531 as a companion of Ulrich Zwingli in the battle of Kappel . In 1384 knight Götz III sold. Mülner the Vogtei via Küsnacht and Goldbach for 400 guilders to the city of Zurich . Küsnacht thus became part of the Obervogtei Küsnacht, which was administered by two senior bailiffs belonging to the Zurich council. This affiliation lasted until 1798.

Küsnacht flood 1778 : In the evening hours of July 8th, 1778 a violent thunderstorm fell over Küsnacht. Huge masses of water poured over the place from the Küsnachter Tobel. The flood destroyed numerous buildings and bridges. 63 people were killed. In 1830 the Küsnachter Memorial was created , a liberal pamphlet calling for a new cantonal constitution with equal rights for town and country. The authors included the German educator Ludwig Snell and the citizens of Küsnacht Heinrich Streuli and Rudolf Brunner.

Not least because of this liberal attitude, the first state teachers 'seminar in Switzerland was opened in 1832 with the Zurich teachers' seminar under Ignaz Thomas Scherr in the Seehof (today the C. G. Jung Institute ). The first two-year training course was attended by 35 prospective teachers. Well-known former seminarians are among others the Swiss writers Ernst Kappeler , Jakob Bosshart and Albin Zollinger . From the seminar in the last quarter of the 20th century, today's Kantonsschule Küsnacht developed (change of name 1983).

During the industrialization , various industrial companies settled in Küsnacht, one of the most important was Terlinden & Co.

On June 3 and 4, 1878, the village was hit again by a flood , 100 years after the last. In 1909, after the construction of the Seestrasse and the railway line on the right bank, the construction zone was extended to almost the entire slope area. As a result, almost the entire vineyard area was built over within a few decades: in 1886 the vineyard area was 148 hectares, in 1950 it was still 3. The old settlement centers of Dorf, Heslibach and Kusen grew together, and also to the neighboring communities of Zollikon and Erlenbach there are no longer any settlement borders.

coat of arms

Blazon :

In red a square gold cushion with corner tassels.

The municipal coat of arms of Küsnacht is a so-called speaking coat of arms , which means that the coat of arms depicts the place name. The connection between “Küsnacht” and “pillow” (Middle High German küssîn ) is, however , incorrect in terms of folk etymology , that is to say in terms of linguistic history.

The Küsnacht coat of arms can perhaps be traced back to that of the municipality of Küssnacht am Rigi . There is evidence of aristocratic relationships between Küsnacht and Küssnacht . The pillow adorned the 1497 crest in the arms of the Commendatore Andreas Gubelmann which the then Johanniterhaus Küsnacht board. While cushions and tassels are golden (yellow) on the office discs from 1544, 1560 and 1574, in the 19th century they were often shown in silver (white). Gerold Edlibach shows in his Zürcher Chronik (approx. 1490; p. 420) another coat of arms, namely a representation of St. George with a dragon on a red background; Georg is first mentioned in 1332 as the patron saint of the Küsnacht parish church. The coat of arms that is valid today was established in 1933 by the municipal council with recourse to the aforementioned office discs from the 16th century.
