Schwörstadt is a municipality in the district of Lörrach in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

Schwörstadt lies at an altitude of 296 to 481 meters directly between the Upper Rhine in the south and the Dinkelberg , a foothill of the southern Black Forest , in the north. The district of Dossenbach is located about three kilometers north of Schwörstadt on the Dinkelberg. The Niederdossenbach district is located around two kilometers north of Schwörstadt and one kilometer south of Dossenbach.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring municipalities on the Rhine are the cities of Wehr upstream and Rheinfelden (Baden) downstream and the Swiss municipality of Möhlin on the opposite side of the river. In the north, Schwörstadt borders on Schopfheim .

The place has entered into an agreed administrative partnership with Rheinfelden .

Community structure

The formerly independent municipality of Dossenbach belongs to the municipality of Schwörstadt. The municipality of Schwörstadt, within the boundaries of 1970, includes the villages Niederdossenbach, Oberdorf and Unterdorf, the settlement "Siedlung outer mountain", castle and courtyard "Schloß und Schloßhof", the yards Eichbühlhof and Hollwangen and the houses Kraftwerkkolonie.

Schwörstadt

Settlement in the area around Schwörstadt goes back to the Stone Age. This is evidenced by the Heidenstein , a remnant of a Dolmen of the Schwörstadt type around the center of the village, which originally served as the entrance stone of a megalithic complex.

Schwörstadt was first mentioned in a document in 1246. In an original feud from 1393 between Johannes Schäfer and the German Order Coming in Beuggen, Schwörstadt is referred to as " Swestat ".

Dossenbach

The district of Dossenbach can be reached on the Dinkelberg plateau. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1247. The most significant event in Dossenbach's history was probably the famous battle near Dossenbach , in which the radical democratic " German Democratic Legion " of Georg Herwegh was defeated by the Württemberg troops on April 27, 1848 during the Baden Revolution , after a week earlier the Hecker train had been struck on the Scheideck near Kandern .

District affiliation

Until the end of 1972 Schwörstadt belonged to the district of Säckingen . When this was dissolved, in contrast to the majority of the district area, the community did not become part of the Waldshut district , but was incorporated into the Lörrach district.

Incorporations

As early as 1929, the municipalities of Oberwörstadt and Niederschwörstadt (including the Niederdossenbach staff holding) had merged to form the municipality of Schwörstadt.

As part of the municipal reform in Baden-Württemberg , Dossenbach was incorporated into Schwörstadt on July 1, 1971.

Religions

Roman Catholic Church of St. Clemens and Urban

The district of Dossenbach is predominantly Protestant because politically it belonged to the Wiesental . The district of Schwörstadt, on the other hand, is predominantly Roman Catholic . Until 1805 it belonged to Upper Austria and thus to the possessions of the Habsburgs . The Catholic parish of Schwörstadt is part of the Wehr pastoral care unit. In contrast, the Evangelical Church in Schwörstadt and the parish church in Dossenbach belong together to the Evangelical Parish Association. In addition, Protestant services are held in the Catholic Mauritius Chapel in Northern Swabia.

Artur Bugger, a non-party graduate in finance, has been mayor of the community since 1985. On March 22, 2009 he was confirmed in office for the fourth time with 51.42 percent of the valid votes cast and a voter turnout of 75.05 percent. He prevailed against four competitors in the first ballot. Around six months before the end of his regular term of office, Brugger surprisingly announced on September 13, 2016 that he would be giving up his office at the end of November. Deputy Harald Ebner (CDU) took over the official business provisionally. The new election scheduled for February 5, 2017 was won by the non-party attorney Christine Trautwein-Domschat with 60.6% of the votes cast and a 62.2% turnout. She formally took office on March 15, 2017, and was inaugurated on March 20, 2017.

Municipal council

The municipal council consists of the elected voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairwoman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. After the local elections on May 26, 2019 , the distribution of seats was as follows: The turnout was 60.74% (2014: 53.3%).

Mayoress

Christine Trautwein-Dornschat (independent) was elected with a clear majority in the mayoral election on February 5, 2017. 60.64 percent of the electorate voted for them, making a second ballot unnecessary as an absolute majority was achieved. 39.36 percent of the voters voted for Matthias Strittmatter (non-party), who also stood there. The turnout was 62.2%.

Town twinning

A partnership with the French community of Aillevillers in the southwest Vosges has existed since May 1984 .

Honorary citizen

In January 2019, Wolfgang Klein was made the first honorary citizen of Schwörstadt. Born in Königsberg in 1922. After the Second World War and the escape from East Prussia , he moved to Schwörstadt. During his time as a fellow citizen, he dedicated several works to the community. Among other things, the works "Houses in Schwörstadt and Dossenbach" (1990), "The History of the Voluntary Fire Brigades in Schwörstadt and Dossenbach" (1992), "The History of Schwörstadt and Dossenbach" (1993), "The Evangelical Church Community Dossenbach" (1994 ), “History of the Fishing Association” (1999) and “The seals and coats of arms of the community of Schwörstadt” (2018).

Culture and sights

dialect

The spoken dialect is Alemannic . A curiosity is that the dialects of Dossenbach and Schwörstadt are quite different. There are even different words for the same terms. This is probably due to the different political affiliations and thus different geographical orientation of Dossenbach.

Until the First World War , Schwörstadt, in particular Niederschwörstadt (via the district Im Hof, which disappeared in the course of the power plant construction in 1929), is said to have been more towards the Rhine, i.e. towards Möhlin. Today the dialects of Möhlin and Schwörstadt also differ greatly, because there has been a national border between the two places for 200 years.

There is a ship connection on the Rhine to Bad Säckingen . There are also numerous special trips on this route.

There is a walking board in the parking lot opposite the town hall. It describes various hikes in and around Schwörstadt.

There is also a swimming pool on the Rhine.

Economy and Infrastructure

Schwörstadt is well connected to the long-distance transport network via the Upper Rhine route of the Badische Hauptbahn ( Basel - Kreuzlingen ). The federal road 34 (Basel - Ludwigshafen am Bodensee ) runs right through the town and thus links it to the national road network. District road 6353 branches off from federal highway 34 and leads directly to Schopfheim via Niederdossenbach and Dossenbach .

The Ryburg-Schwörstadt power plant is located in the south-west of Schwörstadt am Rhein . It was put into operation in 1930 and has an average annual production of 760 GWh with an installed capacity of 110 MW . Pedestrians and cyclists can cross the border between Germany and Switzerland via the facility .

Abandoned nuclear power plant plans

From 1972, a nuclear power plant with three blocks as pressurized water reactors with an output of 1300 MW each was planned on site. In May 1973 the local council approved the project. The resistance was formed among other things in a "Working Group against Atomic Power Schwörstadt" (AGAS). In 1980 the project was abandoned.
