history

The county is one of the oldest counties in the Kingdom of Hungary . It is named after one of the seven military leaders of the time of the conquest.

In 1918 it was combined with part of the former Ung county to form Szabolcs-Ung county with the capital Nyíregyháza; a tiny part of the area north of the Tisza near Malé Trakany and Veľké Trakany came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia as part of border corrections ( confirmed under international law by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920).

After the Second World War , the county was combined with the Hungarian parts of Sathmar and Bereg counties to form Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county ; some parts came near the places Polgár and northeast of Debrecen to the newly created Hajdú-Bihar County .
