Port of L'Île-Rousse

L'Île-Rousse ( Corsican Isula Rossa ; Italian and until 1848 officially Isola Rossa ) is a French port city in the Balagne in the Haute-Corse department on the north coast of Corsica with 3043 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

geology

L'Île-Rousse got its name from the red-colored porphyry rocks in front of the port entrance - the "Île de la Pietra". Today this island is connected to the island of Corsica by a dam .

history

The area was already settled in Roman times. The former fishing village was expanded by Pascal Paoli in 1759 into a commercial port with city fortifications in order to maintain a Corsican port opposite Calvi, which was then still Genoese . By dividing the city area into regular street squares , the late foundation of the place can still be clearly recognized. Until 1848 the official language was Italian.

The CFC network includes a branch line from the lonely Ponte Leccia station on the main line via L'Île-Rousse to the port city of Calvi on the north coast. The route, opened in 1890, is 73.1 km long, initially also crosses the high mountains of Corsica, and then on the second half from L'Île-Rousse as Tramway de Balagne along the coast to Calvi. This path is popularly called "The Fiery Elijah".
