The title went to defending champions Liverpool FC , who defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the final after extra time. Liverpool won the English League Cup for the third time in a row after 1981 and 1982 . Manchester United made it to the final of this competition for the first time and won the FA Cup in 1982/83 two months later . After United's early lead by 17-year-old Norman Whiteside , Alan Kennedy equalized for Liverpool in the 75th minute. Ronnie Whelan scored the winning goal in the eighth minute of extra time and thus ensured the last cup success for coaching legend Bob Paisley .
