The women's 200-meter race at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 12, 13 and 14, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

44 female sprinters from 37 countries took part in the competition. Won the gold medal, the double Olympic champion ( 1976 / 1980 ) and double European champion ( 1978 / 1982 ) over 400 meters Marita Koch from the German Democratic Republic with 22.13 s, also with the 4 x 400-meter relay of the GDR 1980 Olympic silver medalist and two-time Was European champion (1978/1982) and also became world champion and runner-up in over 100 meters with her 4 x 100 meter relay . Silver went to Merlene Ottey, the 1980 Jamaican Olympic third party, with 22.19 s, and the bronze medal was won by British Vice European Champion from 1982, Kathy Cook, with 22.37 s.
