The men's 3,000-meter obstacle course at the 1983 World Athletics Championships took place on August 9, 10 and 12, 1983 in Helsinki , Finland .

35 athletes from 21 countries took part in the competition. The gold medal was won by the reigning European and vice European champion from 1978 Patriz Ilg from the Federal Republic of Germany after 8: 15.06 min, silver went to the Polish vice European champion from 1982 Bogusław Mamiński with 8: 17.03 min. The bronze medal went to the Briton Colin Reitz with 8: 17.75 minutes.
