Preliminary round
The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first two seasons per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest teams - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
doping
This competition was overshadowed by two doping cases that occurred in the US relay.
The US team was the first to reach the goal in 2: 57.54 minutes. Because of the involvement of Antonio Pettigrews in the BALCO affair , who made a confession about his doping practice in 2013, she was subsequently disqualified. Pettigrew's second place over 400 meters was also canceled. Another member of this season convicted of doping was Jerome Young , who was stripped of numerous medals and results - including from these world championships - after several violations, including erythropoietin in 2004, and who was suspended for life.
Two teams were primarily disadvantaged:
- France - The relay had actually qualified for the finals over their time in the second run.
- Poland - The team received its bronze medal years late and was unable to attend the award ceremony.
