Leonid "Leo" Komarov ( Russian Леонид Александрович Комаров ; Transcription: Leonid Alexandrovich Komarov ; * 23. January 1987 in Narva , Estonian SSR ) is a Finnish - Russian hockey player who since July 2018 with the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League under Contract stands.
Career
Leo Komarov, who has both Finnish and Russian citizenship, began his career as a hockey player in the youth of Ässät Pori , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 2005/06 season . In his rookie year , the attacker was runner-up with his team, scoring a total of six points in 44 games in the main round. He also posted four scorer points in 14 playoff games and played five games for the Finnish U20 national team in the second-rate Mestis . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the sixth round as a total of 180 players by the Toronto Maple Leafs , which then did not take him under contract.
In the summer of 2006 Komarov moved to the Pelicans Lahti, for which he was on the ice for the following three seasons. For the 2009/10 season , the left-handed shooter received a contract with HK Dynamo Moscow from the Continental Hockey League . After the season Dynamo merged due to financial problems with the HK MWD Balaschicha to OHK Dynamo . In June 2010 Komarov received a contract with this new club and in 2012 won the Gagarin Cup with the OHK . He then received a one-year contract from the Maple Leafs and completed 49 NHL games for them in the 2012/13 season .
In July 2013 he left the NHL again and was signed by HK Dynamo Moscow before he was signed again by the Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2014. He was active there until the end of the 2017/18 season when his contract was not extended. He subsequently joined the New York Islanders as a free agent and signed a four-year contract with the team.
International
For Finland , Komarov took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 2009 and 2010 World Cups before becoming World Champion with the 2011 Finnish selection . At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the Finnish national team and the bronze medal at the World Championships in 2014 and 2016 respectively the silver medal. A little later he also represented Finland at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 .
