Lier is a town and municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Viken in Norway . It borders Modum and Hole to the north, Bærum and Asker to the east, Drammen to the south and west and Øvre Eiker to the west .

Lier is best known as the city of strawberry cultivation, but also known for growing apples and vegetables. There are good opportunities for excursions here in winter and summer. Lier is also known as the green lung between Oslo and Drammen .

origin of the name

The name Lier derives from líðir ( Norrønt ), which is the plural of líð (hill).

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows five silver-stemmed apple blossoms in a circle in red. It was adopted in 1970. The apple blossoms are said to symbolize fertility.

Geography and population

Most of the residents live in the small towns of Tranby , Nøste , Gullaug , Lierskogen , Sylling and Lierbyen . Other towns in Lier are Reistad , Sjåstad and Egge . Lier covers about a third of the Finnemarka forest area , which is known for its good excursion, fishing and swimming opportunities. The largest inland lake in Lier municipality, the Holsfjord , is an arm of the Tyrifjord . Its lowest point is on Svangstrand near Sylling. There are also the small lakes Nykjua , Goliatten , Asdøltjern and Damtjern . Gilhusodden is a nature reserve and popular excursion destination, where a variety of rare bird species can be found. Lier works closely with Drammen at the local level, but is experiencing increasing pressure from the larger neighboring community. A spin-off from Lierstrand to Drammen in 2005 generated backlash.

Agriculture and industry

In Lier there is a great diversity in agriculture, the main emphasis being on fruit and vegetable breeding. Apple and strawberry cultivation dominate. There are also a number of companies in Lier municipality, including Kværner Eureka, Kiwi Minipris AS, Protan AS, Mester Grønn AS, ASKO Drammen, Scanox AS, Star Maling, Jacobsen Elektro and Tomra Systems ASA.

Culture

Every other year the Lierdagene ( Lierdagene ) are organized in Lier under the direction of the municipality. In 2005 the Lierdagene celebrated their tenth anniversary. There is also the annual apple festival ( Eplefestivalen ) in the region . There has also been the annual Rund um Lier ( Lier Rundt ) bike tour since 2003 . Every second year since 2000, Gillhusodden has the open-air play Hallvards Wahl ( Hallvards valg ), which is based on the legend of St. Hallvard .

Attractions

In the municipality of Lier there is the Bygdeborg , a medieval entrenchment near the Fosskollen , and also the Gjellebekk Skanse , a fortress that was built in 1716 during the Northern War . Nearby is a disused marble quarry that supplied marble for the Marble Church in Copenhagen . There is an obelisk in honor of King Fredrik V , which was erected in the marble quarry during his visit in 1749 . There is a memorial for Oslo's patron saint, St. Hallvard , who was born in the Lier commune area. In Gjellebekk , between Tranby and Liertoppen , there is a copper mine; individual tunnels are very dangerous and should not be entered. The remains of ten British pilots shot down during World War II lie in Sjåstad's cemetery .

The Lierbahn ( Lierbanen ) is a disused railway line between Sylling and Lierbyen and Asker. Biking and hiking trails run along this route today. The Kraftkollen is the highest point in Oslo's Westmark. There is a view of Lier, Drammen and the Oslofjord. The Lyngås Motorbane (also Lyngåsbane), which in the meantime had to make way for a waste disposal facility, was an automobile racing circuit on which a total of 25 rallycross European championship races were held from 1980 to 2004 .

Transport and infrastructure

Lier has a stop on Drammenbane . The Lieråsen tunnel , which opened in 1973, is in the municipality and is Norway's second longest railway tunnel at 10.7 km . Europastraße 18 leads through the municipality .

Partner communities

Lier has three partner communities in Scandinavia: Kokemekki in Finland , Hobro in Denmark and Falköping in Sweden. There are youth exchanges between these three parishes every summer.
