The Lockheed Martin Corporation [ ˌlɔkʰidˈmɑɹtn̩ ] is an American defense and technology company that is primarily active in military and civil aviation as well as in space . Nearly 80% of the US $ 46 billion in 2014 sales came from US government purchases.

history

Lockheed Martin Corporation was founded in March 1995 and is a merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta Corporation . In 1996, the company was Loral Corporation for 9.1 billion US dollars bought. As a result of the merger and serious financial problems in the late 1990s, large shares of the group were sold to the British competitor BAE Systems . This temporarily replaced Lockheed Martin as the largest armaments company in the world. After an extensive renovation, Lockheed Martin was able to claim this title again in 2004.

Lockheed Martin hit the headlines in 1999 when a Mars probe was lost due to a unit error in the navigation system. The Mars Climate Orbiter (MCO) was a NASA probe to Mars with the participation of Lockheed Martin as part of the Discovery program . The cause of the mission failure was with Lockheed Martin: While NASA calculated the momentum p in the metric International System of Units (SI) with the unit N s , the navigation software of the MCO was designed by the manufacturer Lockheed Martin for the imperial system .

In October 2001 Lockheed was awarded the contract for the largest combat aircraft program of the post-war period, the Joint Strike Fighter . This order gave the group new impetus.

The Transportation and Security Solutions department was awarded the contract in 2005 to set up the archiving system for the Electronic Records Archive (ERA) of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) .

On July 20, 2015, Lockheed Martin announced the purchase of Sikorsky Aircraft . According to its own information, the company paid 9 billion US dollars (or 7.1 billion US dollars, taking into account the tax benefits resulting from the takeover). For Lockheed, this step represented a return to the helicopter business after around 45 years of abstinence. This means that the Polish aircraft manufacturer PZL Mielec, which Sikorsky had previously bought, also belongs to the Lockheed Martin Group.

Some products from the original Lockheed company have been in production for over 50 years ( C-130 , P-3 ) or are still being looked after and modernized by Lockheed Martin and are therefore among the longest-lived, alongside the Boeing B-52 and the Tupolew Tu-95 military aircraft types.
