In early March 2011, Rihanna asked her fans about the next single. The fans were asked via Twitter to choose between “ Cheers (Drink to That) ”, “Man Down”, “ California King Bed ” or “Fading”. The song with the most votes would become the next single. On March 12, 2011, it was confirmed that fans had selected California King Bed. Nevertheless, it was decided to officially release "Man Down" in the United States as a single with an accompanying video and to broadcast the track on May 3, 2011 on the US radio station US-Rhythmic Radio for the first time. "Man Down" was released digitally on July 11, 2011 in Denmark, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.

criticism

Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine praised the song, saying that Rihanna was surprisingly agile in the genre and this was one of her best and most confident vocal performances right now.

Commercial win

Before "Man Down" became a single, the song debuted in the US Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs chart at number 84 and in the week of April 9, 2011, finally climbed into the top ten at number nine. In the week of June 11, 2011, the song entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 94 and later reached number 59. The single also managed to reach number 63 on the Canadian Hot 100 .

The song is Rihanna's eighth Top Five placement in France after other singles from Loud such as " Only Girl (In the World) " and " S&M ". Music video

background

The music video for "Man Down" was shot on May 1, 2011 in Portland Parish , Jamaica . It was directed by Anthony Mandler , with whom Rihanna worked frequently. Mandler spoke about the video on MTV News on May 16, 2011. He didn't want to give too much away, but he wanted to show that this clip will get your fans talking when it premieres:

“We did sixteen videos together ... and what the last we did and will be the last will certainly split people's minds. We shot the video in Jamaica last month and it's my favorite song ... so I was really excited to be part of it. And it's one of those songs that has strong narrative and visual demands and let's just say it let me go all the way. So I think you can expect something that is dramatic and shocking and intense and emotional and uplifting and illuminating. "When asked if Rihanna was going to swing a gun in the clip, he replied," Without giving too much away, if you look for an answer in the video, you will not be disappointed. I'm just saying that it will be very exciting. "

The video premiered on May 31, 2011 on BET 's 106 & Park .

action

At the beginning of the dramatic music video, Rihanna shoots a man. The camera focuses on the man who was shot and Rihanna flees. Then the video jumps to the previous day where Rihanna rides a bike through the streets of Jamaica and meets her friends and acquaintances. In between scenes are shown in which Rihanna is alone in a bedroom. Rihanna is later seen in a nightclub. She starts dancing and flirting with a man. It's the same man Rihanna shot at the beginning of the music video. When he begins to press her, she rejects him and turns to go. After Rihanna leaves the club, the man follows her and starts molesting her. She tries to fight him off, but fails and is raped. Then the man disappears, leaving Rihanna on the floor crying. Distraught, she runs home and takes a gun from a drawer.

Critical receptions and blocking

The Parents Television Council (PTC), an American organization that visits objectionable content on US television, criticized Rihanna for portraying a "murderer". She also said, “If Chris Brown shot a woman in his new music video and premiered it on BET, everyone would be in shock. Rihanna shouldn't be favored and she can't just do whatever she wants. ”The PTC also criticized the broadcaster BET for broadcasting the music video for Man Down . Shortly after the TV broadcast, the PTC indexed and blocked the music video.

In an official PTC indexing statement on the music video, Rihanna stated, “I am a 23-year-old singer who has no children. I'm just a girl, I can only be her voice. We all know that indexing every objectionable detail is difficult and embarrassing. The music industry doesn't guard us. We have the free time to create art. Let's do this! It is our job to make sure that the children don't make the same mistakes that we do. You cannot hide the children from society and business, otherwise they will never learn. This is the real world!
