The National Assembly of Guyana is the parliament in Guyana .

composition

The National Assembly consists of 65 members. 53 of them are elected by proportional representation for a five-year term. Another 12 MPs are delegated by the local community assemblies.

In the 2011 election to the National Assembly of Guyana , the PPP won 32 out of 65 seats.

In the early elections to the National Assembly on May 11, 2015 , the ruling party PPP lost to the opposition alliance A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change (AFC) led by David Arthur Granger . The government alliance APNU and AFC now has 33 seats in parliament and the opposition party PPP 32 seats.

Barton Scotland has been President of Parliament since June 10, 2015 .

Parliament building

Parliament has its seat in Georgetown , the capital of Guyana . The foundation stone for the building was laid on March 27, 1829, and upon completion in April 1834, it was used by the Court of Policy . The original name of the building is “Guiana Public Buildings”. When British Guiana became a crown colony in 1928 , a Legislative Council replaced the Court of Policy and took over the building. With independence in May 1966, the Legislative Council was replaced by the Parliament of Guyana.
