Norwegian Air Shuttle (with Norwegian outside ) is a Norwegian low-cost airline based in Fornebu , Bærum and based at Oslo-Gardermoen Airport .

history

Norwegian Fokker 50 in 1999

Norwegian Air Shuttle has been taking over Norwegian regional flights for Braathens since its inception on January 22, 1993 . These services were discontinued on March 31, 2003. In September 2002 the company started with a low-cost flight concept between Oslo-Gardermoen Airport and Stavanger , Bergen , Trondheim and Tromsø with a second-hand Boeing 737-300 . On April 5, 2003, the scheduled service to destinations in Spain and Portugal began, and since April 2003 Norwegian has also operated its own regional flights with Fokker 50 in northern Norway. In the summer of that year, the Norwegian airports in Alta , Harstad / Narvik , Bodø and Ålesund and international airports in London-Stansted and Stockholm / Arlanda were added. On December 18, 2003, Norwegian Air Shuttle went public on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

In April 2007, the Swedish airline FlyNordic was completely taken over by Norwegian Air Shuttle. Since April 2008, this is no longer run as an independent company, but only operates flights on behalf of the parent company under the new name Norwegian.se . In 2008 a codeshare agreement was signed with Stirling Airlines for flights from Oslo and Stockholm.

At the end of 2010, new routes within Finland were offered and flights to eleven holiday destinations started from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport . In May 2011 Norwegian took an order for three Boeing 787-8s from Icelandair , which will be used to fly to long-haul destinations from August 2013. At the beginning of January 2012 the base at Moss Airport, Rygge was closed. Flights at this airport accounted for less than 1 percent of total Norwegian production

In 2011, the company began offering WiFi reception on board on European flights, making it the first airline to offer such a service. At the end of the year, the entire 737-800 fleet was equipped with WiFi.

On January 25, 2012, Norwegian ordered a total of 108 Boeing 737 MAX 8s . The first two machines of the type that are leased were delivered on June 29, 2017 and went to Norwegian Air International .

In the same year it was announced that Norwegian plans to open a base in Bangkok and station a Boeing 787-8 there in order to avoid the high personnel costs in Norway. In spring 2013, two new bases were opened in Alicante and London, and thus for the first time outside of Scandinavia.

Norwegian Air Shuttle started long-haul operations in May 2013. The long-haul flights are operated by wholly-owned subsidiaries: the Norwegian Norwegian Long Haul , the Irish Norwegian Air International , the British Norwegian Air UK and the Argentine Norwegian Air Argentina . Every airline except Norwegian Long Haul has an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) but shares branding and commercial functions with the rest of the group. They operate both the long-haul fleet and flights on behalf of the parent company.

After the opening of the aviation market in Argentina in 2016, Norwegian Air Argentina was founded, which wants to offer domestic flights in the South American country from bases in Buenos Aires , Córdoba and Mendoza . The connection between Buenos Aires and London-Gatwick , which was launched in February 2018, provides connections to Europe .

According to its own information, Norwegian recruited 140 pilots from low-cost flight competitor Ryanair to operate its own fleet in 2017 alone .

In 2018 Norwegian entered into a wet lease agreement with Hi Fly Malta . This includes the three-week operation of an Airbus A380 in scheduled service between London Gatwick Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport from August 3 to 23, 2018. The machine served as a replacement for the company's Boeing 787 "Dreamliner", which had failed due to engine repairs. This made Norwegian the first low-cost airline to operate wet lease flights with an A380. The aircraft used had only recently been transferred to Hi Fly Malta as the first follow-up customer for a used A380. In the same year, Norwegian founded the wholly-owned subsidiary Norwegian Air Sweden in Sweden . which received its approval in November 2018 and took over the first Boeing 737 MAX 8.

On March 12, 2019, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) banned all Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-9 MAX aircraft from operating within Europe. Since then, Norwegian’s 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8s have also been on the ground.

On December 4, 2019, Norwegian Air Argentina was sold for an undisclosed amount to the Chilean low-cost airline JetSmart , a subsidiary of Indigo Partners , which will take over the operation of the airline with immediate effect. For the months after the sale, JetSmart had planned to phase out the Norwegian brand and to integrate the airline into its own Argentinian airline, JetSmart Argentina . Norwegian Air Argentina’s three Boeing 737 aircraft owned by Norwegian Air Shuttle but registered in Argentina were not among the company's assets that were sold to JetSmart. They are scheduled to return to Norwegian Air Argentina’s European operations, while JetSmart will use Airbus A320 Family aircraft in their place .

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 85% of all flights were canceled in mid-March 2020. Therefore, in the 2nd half of March, 95% of the fleet was parked and around 7,650 employees were on leave. As of April, only 7 of the 142 aircraft were flying on state-subsidized domestic flights, with 200 employees still working for Norwegian.

From March to June 2020, the restricted flight operations continued with an average of 50 flights per day. As of July 2020, an average of 100 flights per day were initially operated with 64 destinations in Europe. Including travel destinations in Schengen countries outside of Scandinavia.

Debt crisis

The company had ordered around 220 new aircraft since 2012 to enter the transatlantic market. It was the biggest deal in European aviation history. But the company had taken on itself financially. Engine problems in the Boeing 787 fleet and the flight ban on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 slowed expansion. In January 2019 it was announced that Norwegian was closing its bases in Gran Canaria, Newburgh, Palma, Providence and Tenerife. In Rome-Fiumicino, the short and medium-haul base will be eliminated, while the long-haul base will remain. Norwegian is in the red with 2.3 billion euros, all of their 90 brand new A320 Neo have been put up for sale. In September 2019, the decision to close the Gran Canaria and Tenerife South bases was revised.

Losses were incurred again in the course of 2019. In July 2019, Norwegian founder, CEO and largest shareholder Bjørn Kjos (* 1946) resigned as CEO, which could make a sale easier. In August 2019, the airline sold its 17.5 percent stake in the banking company Norwegian Finans to Cidron Xingu Limited for 2.22 billion Norwegian kroner (222.4 million euros).

In September 2019, it was announced that Norwegian had asked creditors to postpone the repayment of two corporate bonds due in December 2019 and February 2020 for a total of $ 380 million for up to two years. As security, Norwegian offered valuable slots at London's Gatwick Airport. According to an agreement in October 2019, the Chinese leasing company CCB Leasing will take over 70% of the Norwegian fleet and reduce the airline's debt by around 1.5 billion euros. The leasing partner is also financing 27 new Airbus A 320neo aircraft between 2020 and 2023.

In March 2020, the Norwegian government is launching a rescue package for Norwegian. On April 14, 2020, the share price fell over 60% as the company plans to reduce its leverage by issuing new shares .

On April 20, 2020, 4 subsidiaries (Norwegian Pilot Services Sweden AB, Norwegian Pilot Services Denmark ApS, Norwegian Cabin Services Denmark ApS, Norwegian Air Resources Denmark LH ApS), through which the airline had employed pilots and cabin crew in Sweden and Denmark, filed for bankruptcy on. Due to the extraordinary situation (force majeure), Norwegian has also informed OSM Aviation that it has terminated the crew member supply agreements with several of its joint OSM Aviation subsidiaries. These companies have crew members in Spain, the UK, Finland, Sweden and the USA. The actions mentioned affect 1,571 pilots and 3,134 cabin crew. Around 700 pilots and 1,300 flight attendants in Norway, France and Italy are not affected.

On May 4, 2020, the shareholders approved the rescue plan at an extraordinary general meeting. Previously, lenders and leasing companies had agreed to convert part of the debt into Norwegian shares. Together with a capital increase, the requirements were met to receive the 2nd and 3rd batch of state-secured loans.
