Routing

The race started in the Seoul Olympic Stadium . After three laps, the track ran out of the stadium to the south and shortly afterwards to the west. She crossed the Tanjeon River and came to Gangnam Town . After continuing in a north-westerly direction, the route reached the Seocho district and there came to the south bank of the Hangang . The course now followed the quayside to the Dongjak district . Turning north it went on the Mapo bridge over the river. Immediately afterwards, the path led eastward on the north bank through the districts of Mapo-gu and Yongsan-gu . We went over the Benpo Bridge over the slope to the other bank of the river. Now the route ran in an easterly direction parallel to the south bank. The Tanjeon was crossed again near the confluence with the Hangang, then the course approached the Olympic Stadium from the north. There was now an arch around the stadium. From the south, the route led back into the Olympic Stadium, where the goal was reached after a final lap on the track there.

Race course

Former world record holder Robert de Castella, Australia, was Olympic eight

Date: October 2, 1988 , 2:30 p.m. local time ( UTC + 9 h )

The favorites were the African marathon runners, who had become stronger and stronger in recent years, especially Ahmed Salah from Djibouti and the Kenyan world champion Douglas Wakiihuri. Other medal candidates were the Australian Robert de Castella, holder of the world record from 1981 to 1984, and the Italian European champion Gelindo Bordin.

With Gary Fanelli, a track and field athlete from American Samoa took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. The Pacific island of Guam , for which Fred Schumann, Ricardo Taitano and James Walker competed, was also represented at the Olympic track and field competitions for the first time.

The field stayed together for a long time, only at kilometer 25 a top group of thirteen had formed, which was reduced to six athletes at kilometer thirty. Co-favorite Bordin had not kept up the pace between ten and fifteen kilometers and was at times almost fifty seconds behind. But he fought his way back and had caught up again at twenty kilometers. He was in the lead group at thirty kilometers, as did Salah and Wakiihuri. In addition there were the Australian Steve Moneghetti, the British Charles Spedding and the Japanese Takeyuki Nakayama, while de Castella had fallen behind. At forty kilometers, Salah, Wakiihuri, and Bordin had separated from the group. The next kilometer section, which was slightly downhill, brought the preliminary decision. Bordin took the lead, separated from his two companions and stayed in front until the finish. In the end, Gelindo Bordin had a fifteen second lead - the smallest lead an Olympic champion had since 1920 . Behind him, Douglas Wakiihuri won the silver medal twelve seconds ahead of Ahmed Salah.

Gelindo Bordin was the first Italian Olympic marathon champion .

Douglas Wakiihuri and Ahmed Salah won the first medals in this discipline for their countries.

Ahmed Salah was also the first and so far only medalist in Djibouti - as of January 2018.
