Date: August 8, 1992
For the final on August 8th, three athletes from the united team qualified. There were also two Romanians and two Chinese women. The final field was completed by one participant each from Algeria, Mozambique, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the USA.
The reigning world champion Hassiba Boulmerka from Algeria was considered the favorite. Other medal candidates were above all the two runners who started behind her at the world championships, Tetjana Dorowskych, the Ukrainian World Cup runner-up, under her name Tetjana Samolenko also Olympic champion from 1988 over 3000 meters , and Lyudmila Rogatschowa, the Russian World Cup - Third.
The first half of the race was controlled by Rogacheva, who held the top position without a break. Despite the high pace - a 400 meter passage time of 1: 00.66 min - the field stayed together. Boulmerka stayed behind Rogacheva. There were hardly any shifts in position, even in the second lap - 1: 04.36 min - the leading Russian kept the pace high. At the beginning of the final lap the field slowly began to expand. The first three - Rogacheva, Boulmerka and the Chinese Qu Yunxia - were close together, followed with a small gap by Dorowskych and the Russian Yekaterina Podkopajewa, here running for the United Team. The pace remained high with 1: 04.86 min for the third lap. At 1200 meters, Dorowskych closed the gap forwards, so that four runners were now sprinting for the medals. Before the finish curve, the race picked up again. Boulmerka accelerated and pulled past Rogacheva, who could no longer follow the pace of the world champion. Behind it there were significantly larger gaps. Hassiba Boulmerka ran towards the finish line and became Olympic champion. Silver medalist Lyudmila Rogacheva was almost a second and a half behind. The Asian champion Qu Yunxia from China followed in third place ahead of Tetjana Dorowskych and the Chinese Liu Li. The Spanish Maite Zúñiga took sixth place. The fast intermediate times were also expressed in the end times. Four runners undercut the 4-minute mark. Paula Ivan's Olympic record from 1988 was so high that it still held.
Hassiba Boulmerka not only won the first medal for an Algerian woman, she also won Algeria's first ever Olympic victory.
Qu Yunxia became the first Chinese female 1500 meter medalist .
