Attractions
The Ortenberg castle serves as a hostel , but the tower systems are publicly available. The present castle-like building was built from 1838 to 1843 by the Livonian merchant Gabriel Leonhard von Berckholtz based on plans by the architect Friedrich Eisenlohr on the site of Ortenberg Castle, which was destroyed in 1678. Contrary to popular belief, this former imperial castle only gave the place its name, but not the Ortenau landscape . This name is derived from the previous term Mortenau (of lat. Moridunum = Wetlands ), whose initial consonant from the late 16th century vernacular fell victim.
The Bühlweg Chapel was built in 1497 and has been used ecumenically since 1972.
