Pernod Ricard is a French spirits group that was created in 1975 from the merger of the companies Pernod and Ricard , which sold the aniseed of the same name .

Pernod originally came to fame through the production of absinthe . Since the lifting of the corresponding ban in the states of the European Union , absinthe has been produced again. The head office in Germany is in Cologne .

history

The history of Pernod goes back to the company's founder Henri-Louis Pernod, who opened an absinthe distillery in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1797 . In 1805 he moved to Pontarlier in Franche-Comté and founded the Absinthe distillery Maison Pernod Fils there . Pernod died in 1850. In 1871 Ariste Hémard founded the Hémard distillery in Montreuil near Paris and in 1872 Jules-François Pernod founded the Société Pernod Père & Fils in Avignon . After the consumption and production of absinthe had been banned, the company switched to pastis production . In 1926 all three distilleries merged to form Les Établissements Pernod and in 1951 the Pastis 51 brand was brought onto the market. In 1965, the Rousseau, Laurens et Moureaux distillery , which has been producing the Suze liqueur since 1889 , was also taken over .

Ricard was founded in 1932 in Marseille by Paul Ricard . His product soon became France's most popular long drink and also survived the temporary ban on pastis production under the Vichy regime between 1940 and 1944. After Paul Ricard retired from the management, his son Patrick became the company's managing director in 1972. In 1975 Pernod and Ricard merged into one company.

Represented on four continents, Pernod Ricard ranks second behind Diageo among international spirits producers. In 1988 the company bought Irish Distillers and came into the possession of all Irish whiskey distilleries then producing . In 1998 the Yerevan Brandy Company was taken over. In 2001 they took over the spirits division of Seagram and in 2005 the spirits group Allied Domecq was incorporated . In order for the Cartel Office to approve, Pernod Ricard had to part with some brands (including Ardmore , Bushmills , Laphroaig and Tullamore Dew ). At the end of 2005, Glen Grant went to the Campari Group for 115 million euros . Fortune Brands acquired the Canadian Club , Clos du Bois , Courvoisier , Harvey's Bristol Cream , Laphroaig , Maker's Mark and Sauza brands . In April 2008 it took over the absolute vodka manufacturer Vin & Sprit for 5.6 billion euros.

After taking over Vin & Sprit , Pernod Ricard had to commit to selling other brands. Wild Turkey whiskey brand , American Honey liquor , a Kentucky distillery, and bourbon supplies were sold to Campari for $ 575 million in 2009 .

In 2008, Patrick Ricard handed over responsibility as General Manager to Pierre Pringuet .

After the company had expanded steadily in previous years, it was hit by a sales crisis in the 2013–2014 financial year. Sales slumped in the Chinese market in particular . Anti-corruption measures by the Chinese government curbed the consumption of luxury spirits. An unfavorable development in exchange rates also contributed to the decline in sales. Sales fell by 7% compared to the previous year; the operating profit fell by 8%. The net operating result fell by 14% to 1.04 billion euros. As a countermeasure, the company launched a cost-cutting program called Allegro , which was designed to save 900 jobs worldwide.

In February 2015, when Pringuet reached the retirement age of 65, Alexandre Ricard , a nephew of Patrick Ricard, an alumnus of ESCP Europe Business School , took over the management.
