Pixie (hairstyle)

Pixie Short Haircut (2008)

Pixie (named after fairy and goblin figures from English folklore ) is the name for a short hairstyle for women . Typical features of this type of hairstyle are varying hair lengths: mostly short at the back of the head and on the sides, but longer at the top; the sideburns are also often emphasized . In the 1960s it became a symbol of emancipation , fashion awareness and practical, contemporary thinking. Initiated by a number of female stars and the associated media coverage, it experienced a major comeback in the 2010s .

features

The name of the cut is derived from "Pixie" - a small, cheeky mythical creature from British folklore similar to elves or goblins. In terms of hairstyle, the pixie is a shorter version of the bob from the 1920s . Characteristic features are comparatively short sides and the back of the head - whereby the hair is shortened to about 5 cm and a fringed cut line is obtained. The neck area is either stepped or shaved. The ears are free. The suggested sideburns in the form of a strand of hair on the front of the ear are also typical of this hairstyle.

The top hair is usually kept longer on the pixie. A pony- like design of the forehead fringes is just as possible as a side parting or hair that is brushed upwards. Stefanie Ullmann from the Bund deutscher Haarformer characterized the Pixie 2013 as a very variable cut. A masculine Garçon look can be implemented with it as well as a wild- punk look . The lifestyle portal erdbeerlounge.de describes it in its hairstyle catalog as easy to care for and versatile. It emphasizes the facial features of the wearer and is an "absolute eye-catcher" . Clearly visible differences between the sides and the top of the head are important in the implementation; on the forehead both long and short sections of pony went. Another advantage of this cut is the ability to determine the exact styling anew every day.

history

Audrey Hepburn (1954)
Vidal Sassoon (2006)

Stylistically in the tradition of the bob, bobble head and other modern short haircuts, the pixie first appeared in the 1950s . Audrey Hepburn's (new) short hairstyle in the films Roman Holiday (A Heart and a Crown; 1953) and Sabrina (1954) received a lot of media attention. The French actress Jean Seberg advanced to become a pioneer and icon of the pixie . Her appearances in the films Bonjour Tristesse (1958) and Out of Breath (1960) made the new short haircut internationally known. Combined with the onset of the Nouvelle Vague wave, it gave it a fresh, unconventional image. Other well-known multipliers were the model Twiggy and the actresses Shirley MacLaine and Barbra Streisand . The coverage of Mia Farrow's new short hair look in the novel Polanski film Rosemary's Baby (1968) became a media event . The London star hairdresser Vidal Sassoon designed Farrow's haircut for the live event, so that Farrow's new look made headlines even before the premiere of the film.

In the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s the novelty effect gradually wore off. Regardless of this, a number of stars wore short pixie-style haircuts for a period or longer during this period. Well-known examples: the entertainer Liza Minnelli , the Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox , the actress Sharon Stone and - at the beginning of her career - Madonna . British actress Judi Dench is known for her short pixie haircut regardless of fashion waves .

Liza Minnelli (2006)

Pixie hairstyles made a major comeback in the 2010s . The trigger was more or less spectacular hair look changes by well-known stars. One trigger was the switch from Harry Potter actress Emma Watson . Watson justified her switch with the fact that her hair length was subject to contractual clauses during the Harry Potter filming. Other celebs who switched to pixie-like short haircuts in the late 2000s include series star Miley Cyrus ( Hannah Montana ), actresses Anne Hathaway , Natalie Portman , Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, and model Agyness Deyn . The media also hyped the new pixie look by US singer Beyoncé Knowles and celebrity model Tyra Banks, which was staged publicly via Instagram . The lifestyle media and industry publications took the larger number of celebrity haircut changes as an opportunity to declare the pixie the new hairstyle trendsetter.

Fashion controversy

The pixie received increased media attention from the turn of the year 2013/2014 as a currently fashionable short hairstyle for women. As a classic short haircut, according to some media, it is modern and therefore represents the new self-image of the sovereignty of women. Ralf Schwele, Creative Director at the Vidal Sassoon Salon in Berlin , was quoted in the FAZ as saying that every woman could wear this hairstyle, one only had to pay attention to the proportions and the shape of the outer line. The Tagesspiegel, on the other hand, questioned a consistent trend and characterized customer acceptance as rather mixed. A customer in a salon in Berlin-Charlottenburg, for example, stated critically: “Women often cut their hair. And when they fall in love, they want their long hair back immediately. ”In summary, the article summarizes that short hairstyles are especially popular in the fashion and gender elite. To the point that to be a certain amount of courage to belong to wear their hair short, the Post quoted a 15-year-old Berlin schoolgirl with the statement: "Taking the hair cut short, it requires courage." The reason for her reservations she stated the fear of being mistaken for a lesbian with a short haircut.

The renaissance of the pixie was rated positively by the British daily The Guardian . On its website, the Guardian not only presented the best Pixie role models of all time. The timeless popularity of this short haircut classic is mainly due to the style icon Jean Seberg and the associated retro effect. The Guardian characterized the role model function associated with this with the succinct formulation: “If you see a woman on the street with a pixie hairstyle, the chances are high that this woman came under the influence of the Seberg Effect before she came into Hairdressing chair took a seat. "
