Theodor Bergk (full name Wilhelm Theodor von Bergk , born May 22, 1812 in Leipzig , † July 20, 1881 in Ragaz , Switzerland ) was a well-known German classical philologist . He was a member of the Committee of Seventeen of the Frankfurt National Assembly .

Life

Bergk was born in Leipzig as the son of the translator and popular philosopher Johann Adam Bergk . It was there that he attended the humanistic Thomas School . From 1830 to 1834 studied classical philology with Gottfried Hermann at the University of Leipzig . In 1836 he became a teacher at the Latin secondary school in Halle. From 1838 he taught at the Carolinum grammar school in Neustrelitz and under August Meineke at the Joachimsthal grammar school in Berlin. In 1840 he switched to the high school in Kassel .

In 1842, he succeeded Karl Friedrich Hermann as a full professor of classical philology at the University of Marburg . In 1852 he was offered a call to Freiburg , where he also became senior librarian of the university library from 1855 . Another call followed in 1857 to Halle . For health reasons he retired in 1869 and moved to Bonn . Bergk made literary efforts to help the Greek poets. His main works were Poetae lyrici graeci and History of Greek Literature (1872). He was also responsible for the journal for antiquity for several years . He sat down u. a. critically deal with Theodor Mommsen .

From 1847 to 1849 he was a moderately liberal representative of the University of Marburg in the Kurhessische estates assembly . In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament . From 1848 to 1849 he was a member of the Committee of Seventeen of the Bundestag in Frankfurt.

From 1844 he was a full member of the German Archaeological Institute in Rome . In 1845 he became a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1860, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences accepted him as a full member and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen as a corresponding member (from 1876 external member). In 1843 he was elected chairman of the Philologists' Assembly in Kassel. In 1867 he took over the vice-presidency of the Halle Philologists' Assembly. He was also a member of the examination committee in Halle.

He died in 1881 in the spa town of Ragaz.
