regulate
At Save the Million! Each candidate, who competes as a team of two, receives start-up capital of one million euros in 40 bundles of 25,000 euros each in 50-euro notes. Over the course of eight game rounds, you must try to keep as much of it as possible by answering the questions correctly. Unlike other quiz programs, it is not about building up the profit to an ever larger sum, but about losing little of the starting capital.
Before each round of the game, the candidates have the choice between two topics, from which a question is then asked. However, the connection between topic and question cannot be foreseen in some cases, as the description of the category can be misleading. In each round of the game, the candidates are first presented with several possible answers and then the related question. Within 60 seconds, the candidates have to distribute all of their playing capital to the answer options, whereby they can place any number of € 25,000 bundles on each answer; However, at least one answer field must remain empty. For the next round, they only keep the proportion that they wagered on the correct answer. If you have not wagered on a correct answer, the game is over for the candidates without a win.
In the first four rounds of the game, four possible answers are suggested, in the next three rounds only three. In the final round there are only two options, the candidates have to bet all of the remaining money on one of them.
In the first show, the candidates had to bring their remaining money back to the starting position after each round - a rule that was abolished in the second show.
Until the broadcast on March 2, 2011, there were no jokers or other ways of helping the candidates. A joker was introduced for the first time on March 9, 2011 after the joker system had worked well in the celebrity special. With the joker it is possible to swap the selected category for the previously deselected one in the game and thus receive the other question. This decision must be made before the 60 seconds to distribute the money begins.
Optical design
The candidates are on a round stage that is separated from the audience by a railing. The possible answers are displayed on flat-screen monitors , in front of which there are fields with trap doors for storing the money. The trap doors in front of the wrong answers open at the end of the game round - to increase the tension not always all at once - so that the money on them falls down into a catch basin. The lost money remains visible through a glass bottom.
Screen splitting is often used during the counseling phase for candidates .
Studio and broadcast frequency
The broadcast is usually recorded in Cologne, the celebrity specials have always been broadcast live. Recordings usually start on Thursdays and Fridays from 2.30 / 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 / 8.00 p.m., so that candidates don't actually have to wait a week to continue playing. The program was broadcast from 2010 to 2012 on Wednesday evenings every 2 or 3 weeks, and under certain circumstances it was also broadcast weekly. Since February 2013, the program has been broadcast on Thursday evening at 8:15 pm and then ran weekly. Celebrity specials 1 and 2 were broadcast live on Saturday and Wednesday evenings, while the 2nd special was overdrawn by 30 minutes. The 3rd celebrity special was recorded the previous Thursday.
Moderation
The show was moderated by Jörg Pilawa . It was his first ZDF show after he switched from ARD .

The first season of the Swiss version called The Million Trap was broadcast in the 2011 summer program on SRF 1 . After that, the show became an integral part of the SRF Quiz Monday. Because the production location was the same at the beginning, namely the ZDF studios, there were only a few differences to the German version.
The main prize was one million Swiss francs . While the rules were identical and the joker could be used once, the million were mostly flowers . Only the top and bottom 50-franc banknotes in the bundle of money were genuine. Nevertheless, the opening act with the money transporter from the first Rette die Million! shown, but without any indication of the authenticity of the money.
Was moderated The million case of René Rindlisbacher , who according Millionaire? and 1 against 100 is working as a quiz master for the third time. A broadcast lasted almost 50 minutes. The highest profit was achieved in the first broadcast in the amount of 300,000 francs, which is also the largest sum of money that the SRF had to pay from its own hand to date.
A celebrity special was also broadcast on November 26, 2011, in which Nik Hartmann and Mario Torriani , Mari and Bernhard Russi as well as Sandra Studer and Marco Rima took part. A total of 175,000 francs was raised for a good cause.
Since the third season, the quiz show has been recorded in the replica studio in Zurich .
On June 29, 2015, the last episode of Die Millions Trap ran. Rolf Tschäppät, Head of Comedy and Quiz at SRF, justified this as follows: "Not every program has the same lifespan. The public's interest in 'The Million Trap' has waned after around 80 issues."
International versions
Programs of the same or only slightly modified format (for example, only seven questions in the USA) are also produced or planned in other countries. Here all versions in the order of the first broadcast.

criticism
The first show hit the headlines as the audience was held for seven hours without a toilet or drink. Pilawa and ZDF apologized for the incident.
Stern.de criticizes that the concept is wrong, since the entire quiz is a single series of defeats. Süddeutsche.de complains that it is a good show with a good presenter and good candidates.
Trivia
When I asked about the Bremen distress line with the number 124 124, so many curious TV viewers called that the emergency call was temporarily overloaded. For security reasons, the ZDF waived further similar questions according to press reports.
