The municipality of Sallèles-d'Aude is located about ten kilometers north-north-west of Narbonne .

The municipality includes the Truilhas district with the industrial park of the same name in the northwest. A specialty is the town of Le Somail , located at a crossing over the Canal du Midi , whose northernmost tip belongs to Sallèles-d'Aude. The mostly flat terrain of the community is forestless except for the banks of the water. In the vast plains and on the hills rising to a maximum of 46 m above sea level in the northeast, wine is mainly cultivated.

Neighboring municipalities of Sallèles-d'Aude are Ouveillan in the north, Cuxac-d'Aude in the east, Moussan in the south, Saint-Marcel-sur-Aude and Ginestas in the west and Mirepeisset and Argeliers in the north-west.

Waters

The municipality extends along the lower course of the Cesse , which represents the southwestern municipal boundary , up to its confluence with the Aude , which also forms the southern municipality boundary. The Canal du Midi runs through the north-west of the municipality , from which the Canal de Jonction branches off and connects to the Aude in a south-easterly direction. The Canal de Jonction lies entirely in the territory of the municipality of Sallèles-d'Aude.

history

In 924 Sallèles appears for the first time in a written source. The settlement of the area goes back much further, as the archaeological site Amphoralis north of the core town shows. The site, which is covered today and opened as a museum in 1992, shows pottery from Gallo-Roman times based on the rich clay deposits in the area. The pottery tradition lasted for a very long time in Sallèles, whose location near the Aude and the later opened waterways Canal du Midi, Canal de Jonction and Canal de la Robine have good transport and trading opportunities for the clay products (amphorae, bricks, tiles, clay pipes), but also bid for wine. Sallèles-d'Aude reached the peak of economic development in the 19th century, when numerous boatmen, lock keepers, craftsmen for repairing inland waterways, fishermen and winegrowers went about their work in the village.

There is a connection to the Narbonne traffic junction ( A 9 and A 61 ) via the neighboring communities of Cuxac-d'Aude and Saint-Marcel-sur-Aude . Passenger traffic on the Narbonne-Sallèles-Bize railway line, which opened in 1887, was discontinued in 1939.
