Morrissey at the SXSW Festival 2006

Steven Patrick Morrissey [ ˈmɒɹɪsiː ] (born May 22, 1959 in Manchester , England ) is a British singer who is known, among other things, for his controversial lyrics and provocative public statements. As a stage name he uses his last name and is briefly called Moz or Mozzer by the music press and many fans .

Morrissey is best known as the singer of the style-forming and successful indie rock band The Smiths in the 1980s , which in 2004 was named Most Influential Artist Ever by the New Musical Express .

After The Smiths broke up in 1987, Morrissey started an eventful, but successful solo career. His often provocative and cynical texts revolve around topics such as social outsiders , animal rights , ambiguous sexuality and unrequited love , and are best known for their biting self-irony, their personal openness and their intellectual and politically influenced puns.

Life

Childhood and youth

Steven Patrick Morrissey was born on May 22, 1959 in Davyhulme, a suburb of Manchester , as the son of the Irish Catholic immigrants Elizabeth Dwyer and Peter Morrissey and grew up in Stretford / Manchester. At an early age he developed interests that differed from those of his peers, and at the age of six began collecting records from various pop singers (including Sandie Shaw , Billy Fury , Marianne Faithfull ).

He had a close relationship with his mother, a librarian. At first he even wanted to become a librarian himself. He owes many of his passions and hobbies to his mother, which he practiced almost obsessively in his youth. He began reading Oscar Wilde's works as a child , which would greatly influence his later work. In the course of his childhood, Morrissey could watch his parents grow apart. They only got divorced when Steven was 17 years old. His parents' relationship and the deeds of serial killers Myra Hindley and Ian Brady , who molested and killed children and young people in the Manchester area in the 1960s, had an impact on his further development. The killers were convicted after they were reported to the police by a man named David Smith. However, this is only one of innumerable interpretations of the later band name The Smiths . In one of his first songs, Suffer Little Children , he worked up exactly this story of the murdered children from Manchester, which caused the first heated controversy in the English tabloids.

At the age of eleven, Morrissey decided to become a vegetarian . 30 years later, he decided to go vegan and has been openly advocating a vegan lifestyle ever since.

Since Morrissey did not do well in his school placement test, he had to go to St. Mary's Secondary Modern School in Stretford, which was then primarily known for a low level of education and backward educational methods. Morrissey later processed the experiences he made during his school days in the Smiths song The Headmaster Ritual . During this time he withdrew more and more into himself and had little contact with his classmates, but was often seen at various rock concerts in Manchester.

After leaving school early, he became interested in literature, film and music. As early role models, Morrissey served the actor James Dean , the glam rock band The New York Dolls and the writer Shelagh Delaney , whose drama A Taste of Honey was to be a main inspiration for his later texts.

His youth was marked by depression and frustration. He had few friends, took antidepressants and sleeping pills, and seldom left his darkened bedroom, where he would often spend days typing on a typewriter. He had one or two smaller jobs, but gave them up after a short time. Nevertheless, he was no longer a stranger to the Manchester scene due to his music journalistic activities, and in 1978 he briefly replaced the singer of the band The Nosebleeds , in which Billy Duffy also played, who later became known as the guitarist of Theater of Hate and The Cult .

The years with The Smiths

In January 1982 he finally got to know the four years younger guitarist Johnny Marr (aka Maher), who was trying to start a band at the time. Morrissey described the meeting in such a way that one day Johnny Marr had just stood outside his door and he knew immediately that this was the encounter he had always been waiting for. They immediately started working together. Marr wrote the music, Morrissey the lyrics.

Together with bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce , the four Mancunians founded the group The Smiths . The combination of ironic, psychological lyrics by Morrissey and the melodic guitar riffs by Marr made The Smiths one of the most influential bands. The Smiths' music combined traditional rock elements with catchy pop, elegant melodies with powerful guitar riffs, sensitive demeanor with controversial lyrics, melancholy with cynical humor. Morrissey's use of flowers (especially daffodils and gladioli ), which he used as stage props and swinging wildly through the air, is particularly interesting , as is his idiosyncratic dance style.

During this time, the strange relationship between Morrissey and some English music magazines began, which on the one hand elevated him to the new god of music, but on the other hand repeatedly attacked him because of his cynical, ambiguous lyrics. In total, the band released four studio albums, three compilation albums and one live album during its existence .

In 1987 the band members felt more and more that the chemistry was no longer right. After Johnny Marr suddenly left the band, Joyce, Rourke and Morrissey tried to get by without Marr for the time being, but failed after a short time. The four band members went their own ways; Morrissey and Marr subsequently communicated only through the British tabloids.

Today, many well-known rock bands (including The Libertines , Franz Ferdinand , Oasis , The Killers , Deftones , New Found Glory , Suede , Belle and Sebastian , Muse , Arctic Monkeys ) name the Smiths as a source of influence. In particular, Morrissey's exalted vocal style influenced many Britpop bands of the 1990s.

Career as a solo artist

Shortly after the band The Smiths split up in September 1987, Morrissey released his first single, Suedehead, and his first solo album, Viva Hate , in early 1988 , which immediately hit the English charts. Morrissey continued to write only the lyrics and the vocal part, while various musicians such as Stephen Street, Gary Day ( Frantic Flintstones ), Alain Whyte , Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias were responsible for the instrumental in the course of his solo career . The frequent changes in management, which was also common in the time of the Smiths, continued in Morrissey's solo career. Although he continued to regularly release singles and long players in the years that followed, most were less successful than expected. Singles like Ouija Board, Ouija Board were positively panned by criticism, whereupon work on Morrissey's second solo album Bona Drag was interrupted and the record was later only released as a B-side collection.

Even if the following albums like Kill Uncle were never particularly successful commercially, a fanatical following and a real hype developed around the singer over time . The main characteristic of the star cult around Morrissey is that fans repeatedly fight their way up onto the stage during his performances and try to hug and kiss the singer. After Morrissey had not toured since the Smiths split up, the first world tour took place in 1991. One of his concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles sold out 17,000 tickets in just 22 minutes faster than a Beatles concert . In the same year he became aware of the singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick , when she spontaneously stepped in for the opening act of one of his USA concerts, he brought her by his side for further appearances on the tour and thus the foundation stone for Ferrick's career was laid. The album Vauxhall and I , released in 1994 and characterized by a melancholy tone , again reached a top position in the British charts and is considered the best of his solo career. The accompanying The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get was the only Morrissey single to reach the UK top ten during the 1990s. In August 1994, Interlude , in a duet with Siouxsie Sioux , became a hit.

In the course of his career, Morrissey was repeatedly exposed to sharp criticism. Due to the ambiguity of his lyrics (e.g. in Reel around the fountain and The hand that rocks the cradle on the Smiths' debut album), he was accused of pedophile hints in the 1980s . In August 1992 he performed at a reunion gig by the ska band Madness in front of a billboard depicting two female skinheads, waved the Union Jack (to Glamorous Glue ) and also played his controversial song The National Front Disco from the album Your Arsenal . As a result, a racism debate began in the English music press , which was directed against Morrissey and related to his controversial appearance. He himself did not react to the allegations, which is why formerly enthusiastic music magazines such as the NME boycotted him.

While Morrissey served the British gossip press as a popular target for negative headlines, a loyal following developed around the singer in the 1990s, especially in the USA. Although Morrissey is seen today as one of the quintessentially British stars, during this time he turned more and more from England, with which he is connected in a kind of love-hate relationship (e.g. Irish Blood, English Heart ). After a short period in Dublin, he moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and lived there until mid-2005 in a villa on Sunset Boulevard, which was built by Clark Gable in 1931 . According to press reports, his current residence is a hotel in Rome .

The speculation about a reunion of The Smiths, often voiced by fans and the music press , was finally dashed in 1996 when Mike Joyce, the ex-drummer of The Smiths , sued Morrissey for payments ostensibly due to him from the Smiths' time together. Morrissey was eventually sentenced to appropriate payments and processed what he saw in the screaming injustice in the song Sorrow Will Come in the End , which appeared on the album Maladjusted and in which death threats apparently directed against Joyce are heard . For this reason, this song landed on the index in Great Britain and cannot be found on the album version published there.

After several years without a record deal and - measured by his earlier successes - mediocre records, the album You Are The Quarry was released in 2004 , which was enthusiastically received by fans and critics alike. All four singles , Irish Blood, English Heart , First of the Gang to Die , Let me kiss you and I have forgiven Jesus made it into the top 10 in Great Britain, something that had never before been done at any other Morrissey or Smiths studio Album occurred. The first two also made it into the top 50 in Germany. After years of self-chosen exile, Morrissey embarked on an extensive tour of Great Britain again, which was over 15,000 ago in a concert that was sold out in a very short time on the day of his 45th birthday in his native Manchester Viewers peaked. A recording of the concert is titled Who put the M in Manchester as a DVD appeared. In 2005, the live album Live At Earls Court was released .

In April 2006 the album Ringleader of the Tormentors was released , accompanied by the first single You have killed me . The work was produced by studio legend Tony Visconti ( T. Rex , David Bowie ) in the recording studios in Rome by Ennio Morricone , whose orchestra is also used on the track Dear God, Please Help Me .

After Morrissey delighted audiences with his performances at Rock am Ring, Rock im Park and the Montreux Jazz Festival in the summer of 2006, a short tour of Germany followed in December 2006 (Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg).

Morrissey's current band consists of Boz Boorer (guitar), Jesse Tobias (guitar), Gary Day ( electric bass ), Mikey V. Farrell ( keyboard ) and Matt Walker ( drums ). During the 2007 US tour, Solomon Walker (Matt Walker's brother) replaced Gary Day.

After Morrissey had left the Sanctuary label and entered into a new contract with Decca, another “Greatest Hits” compilation was released in February 2008 with the two singles That's how People grow up and All you need is me .

On February 16, 2009, his ninth studio album, Years Of Refusal , was released, which was recorded at Conway Studios, Los Angeles. As with You Are The Quarry, the producer was the American Jerry Finn , who died shortly after the work was finished as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Morrissey has confirmed that he has completed a 660-page autobiography . The NME announced on July 14, 2011 that this should be published in December 2012. It eventually became 480 pages.

On October 24th, 2009, Morrissey passed out after only one song with breathing problems on stage at the Oasis Leisure Center in Swindon (south-west England). Shortly afterwards he regained consciousness. He was taken to the Great Western Hospital for examination. The tour could be continued after a few days of interruption.

On October 30, 2009, Swords, an album with B-side titles selected by Morrissey, was released. The work World Peace Is None of Your Business followed in 2014 .

In October 2014, Morrissey announced to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo that he had had cancer for a year and a half and had therefore undergone multiple operations .

On August 22, 2017, Morrissey announced the release of his 11th studio album, entitled Low in Highschool , on November 17, 2017 on his self-founded label Etienne (the French version of his first name Steven).

Morrissey's 12th studio album was released on May 24, 2019. This album includes cover versions by artists such as Bob Dylan , Joni Mitchell and Roy Orbison .

On March 20, 2020, Morrissey released his 13th studio album, I Am Not a Dog on a Chain . The reviews varied. Arne Willander emphasized in the German Rolling Stone that the record contained “a lot of unmistakable Morrissey melodies (somehow grandiose, somehow elegiac, somehow plaintive)” - even though Morrissey only wrote the lyrics, as always. Musically there are among other things "ancient beats from Pet Shop Boys hits, brass sections , small piano interludes, a distinct melodramatic duet with Thelma" Don't Leave Me This Way "Houston" , lyrically "he is now generally insane recognized troubadour ”in his late work phase“ absolute fool freedom ”. Thomas Winkler called the record in the Musikexpress "old-white-man-music" and judged the lyrics that up to now one could still get upset about Morrissey. "Now you just feel sorry for him."

Views

Morrissey during an interview in 2006

Morrissey is considered an eccentric contemporary. While it initially represented more left-wing positions in political terms, it has now moved far to the right. In his music or in interviews he often expresses himself deliberately provocatively on the following topics:

  • Politics: The Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was one of his favorite enemies during the Smiths' time, about whom he repeatedly commented very negatively until her death. He accused them of wanting to destroy the English working class. According to his anti-Thatcher song Margaret On The Guillotine , his house was raided by British police. Other targets of his criticism were Tony Blair and George W. Bush . Before the 2004 US elections, he publicly called for Bush to be elected from office. When asked if he was a football fan, he said he would be an obsessive fan if instead of a ball (the then UK Prime Minister) kicked Tony Blair. In 2016 he ran for the Animal Welfare Party as a candidate in the mayoral elections in London.
Since 2018, however, Morrissey has been publicly promoting the right-wing radical party For Britain and has expressed corresponding positions. Among other things, he wore the badge of "For Britain" in public TV appearances such as Jimmy Fallon's " The Tonight Show ".
After the terrorist attack in Manchester on May 22, 2017 , Morrissey criticized the reactions of Prime Minister Theresa May , the Mayors of London and Manchester Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham as well as the Queen on Facebook : It is easy to call for fearlessness when you are in a " bulletproof bladder “and have nothing to fear personally. The singer complained that the Islamist background to the attack had not been publicly stated clearly enough and drew a connection between the attack and Mays allegedly to liberal immigration policy. The taz described the post as “anti- political correctness paranoia”, xenophobic and right-wing populist .
In 2017 he claimed in an interview with Der Spiegel that Berlin had become the “ rape capital ” of Europe as a result of the refugee crisis in Germany from 2015 onwards due to the immigration of Muslims . Multiculturalism ultimately leads to the fact that there is no longer any culture: “Millions of people” have died for German identity ; now it is important to protect the country from migrants.
  • Racism: His songs Bengali in Platforms and The National Front Disco with the cynical line of text "England for the English" were repeated - and in some people's opinion incorrectly - interpreted as racist and prompted early debate about Morrissey's political views. Although he claims to have a large number of records by black musicians (including by Martha & the Vandellas - "Third Finger - Left Hand") and is an avowed fan of the group The Supremes , he could make the allegations of a fundamental aversion to Black To cherish music, to this day, does not weaken.
  • Sexuality: Morrissey admitted to living in a kind of self-imposed celibacy in the 1980s . In 1990 he announced that he was getting his sex every night from the live performances. That and the fact that many of his lyrics revolve around homoerotic topics, many of his idols were homosexual or bisexual and he often appears very provocative during performances led to rumors of an unacknowledged homosexuality of the singer. He himself never made it clear, but said he was “not a very sexual person” and he pushed the confusion. (Songs with relevant lyrics: Piccadilly Palare , He Knows I'd Love to See Him , Still Ill , This Charming Man , Handsome Devil , A Swallow On My Neck , (I'm) The End Of The Family Line , Ambitious Outsiders )

“I find it extremely boring that our society places so much emphasis on sexuality. I find the whole idea of sexuality superfluous. I cannot accept terms like heterosexuality, bisexuality, homosexuality. They are just prefixes that precede the word 'sexuality'. It can be concluded from this that there are great differences between people, and that is not true. Actually, all people need exactly the same thing. There is no way I can recognize heterosexuality. It doesn't exist, and I am convinced that homosexuality doesn't exist either. "

- Morrissey : quoted in: Axel Schock , Karen-Susan Fessel : OUT! Querverlag, Berlin 2004, ISBN 3-89656-111-1 .
  • Loner: Morrissey has been known since childhood as an eccentric loner who gets along well with few people. Many of his employees had to experience this first hand, whom he fired for no apparent reason by sending them mysterious messages on postcards. His closest friends include Linder Sterling, a singer and photographer he has known since the 1970s, and Nancy Sinatra for a number of years . He was very close friends with the boxer and photographer Jake Walters in the mid-1990s.
  • Vegetarianism: His mother, a staunch vegetarian, influenced Morrissey to stand up for animal rights herself. He has been a vegetarian since he was eleven ; the Smiths' second studio album was named Meat is Murder . In 2005, Morrissey received the Linda McCartney Memorial Award from the animal welfare organization PETA for his commitment to animal rights . He refused to perform in Dresden's old slaughterhouse after he learned what the name of the venue means, and had a concert planned there canceled. After the Canadian government announced a seal hunt in 2006, Morrissey decided not to give concerts in Canada. In July 2011, he caused a scandal when he announced the song Meat Is Murder at a concert in Warsaw with the remark that the massacre recently perpetrated by a right-wing extremist in Norway was nothing compared to what happened at McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken happen every day.
  • Music: Morrissey was a walking encyclopedia of pop history from childhood. At the age of ten he was reading all the major music magazines, and at twelve he was at his first concert. Morrissey was also one of the few to see the now famous Sex Pistols performance at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976. His early musical influences include Patti Smith and T. Rex (whose song "Cosmic Dancer" was often played live in the early stages of his solo career) and Roxy Music .
  • Colleagues: Morrissey is known for his malicious comments, among other things, often referring to other musicians such as George Michael , Madonna , Britney Spears ("Broccoli Spears") , Janet Jackson , Whitney Houston , Elton John , Robert Smith and his former idol David Bowie ( "David Showie") aim.
  • The Royals: Morrissey repeatedly accused the British royal family of ignorance and self-enamored stupidity. He expressed the view that Prince Charles had absolutely no intelligence. His aversion to the royal family and their roots is particularly evident in "Irish blood, English heart" ("... and spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell and denounce this Royal line that still salutes him ..."). Before William and Kate's wedding, he described the Royal Family as scroungers in a radio interview with the BBC (“ … I do seriously believe that they are benefit scroungers and nothing else… ”).
  • Literature: Morrissey has been a literary fanatic since childhood and is a big fan of Oscar Wilde (he claims to have read everything by and about him) and Shelagh Delaney , whose work "A Taste of Honey" has had a considerable influence on many of the texts Smiths songs. In his youth he also wrote several short books, including the James Dean biography James Dean is not dead and a book about his favorite band, the New York Dolls .
