The Strada Statale 18 Tirrena Inferiore (abbreviation: SS 18 ) is an Italian national road , of Naples by Reggio Calabria leads. It runs through the Italian region of Campania , Basilicata and Calabria and is 535 km long.

Along with the A2 motorway, the SS 18 is one of the most important traffic axes from Naples to the south and runs mainly along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea .

The route begins in Naples and initially runs parallel to the A2 motorway. It connects the municipalities of Portici , Torre del Greco , Torre Annunziata , Pompei , Scafati , Angri , Pagani , Nocera Inferiore , Nocera Superiore , Cava de 'Tirreni , Vietri sul Mare and finally reaches Salerno .

In the province of Salerno, it continues through the localities of Campagna , Pontecagnano , Bellizzi and Battipaglia . From here the A2 and the SS18 continue in different directions, which now run close to the coast through the Sele plain to Agropoli , where you briefly meet the Tyrrhenian Sea .

Then she laboriously looks for a way through the hinterland of the Cilento , past Prignano Cilento , Omignano Scalo , Vallo della Lucania , Laurito , Alfano , Torre Orsaia , Policastro Bussentino to Sapri in the Gulf of Policastro . At the same time, the SP 430 runs from Agropoli to Sapri, which is largely free of intersections and relieves the villages of the SS 18 through traffic.

The road now follows the coast, past Maratea and after 10 km already reaches the region of Calabria .

Calabria

Past the villages of Praia a Mare , Scalea , Diamant , Cetraro , Paola , you come back to the A2 motorway at Nocera Scalo . In the further course via Miletto , Rosarno , Gioia Tauro , Palmi , Bagnara Calabra you reach the ferry connection to the island of Sicily at Villa San Giovanni . A few kilometers further on, the road ends in Reggio Calabria.
