action

American Paranormal Researcher Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate and document the 1976 murders at the Amityville Horror House to determine whether a demonic presence took hold of Ronald DeFeo Jr. and led him to the murder of his family on Aug. November 1974 has forced. During a séance , Lorraine has a vision in which she reenacts the murders with gun in hand. A demon in the form of a nun appears to her and she experiences how her husband is impaled and fatally injured. However, Ed is able to wake her up from this dream-like vision.

In 1977: 11-year-old Janet Hodgson lives in Enfield, London with her single mother, Peggy, and three siblings Margaret, Billy and Johnny. After Janet and Margaret play with a homemade ouija one night , Janet begins to sleepwalk. In her dreams a ghostly being speaks to her, who insists that the house belong to him and that she should leave it. Eventually, the other siblings in the house and Peggy also witness the paranormal events that force them to temporarily leave the house and seek refuge with befriended neighbors.

When the local media, as well as British paranormal activity investigator and technical advisor, Maurice Grosse, interviewed the Hodgsons, it turns out that a poltergeist has manifested in the house. The latter has taken possession of Janet and introduces himself to them as Bill Wilkins. An elderly man with this name previously lived in the family house and died in an armchair. As the signs of Janet's demonic possession mount, the case eventually reaches the Warrens. You have been requested by the local church to come to London to assist and document the investigation. Enfield is meanwhile already referred to as England's Amityville due to the incidents. Lorraine, who a year earlier had a vision of Ed's death and the nun demon during the investigation in Amityville, later receives another vision at the Warren's house, during which she learns the name of the demon and scribbled it in her Bible. She therefore warns Ed against taking this case. Ed wants to help the family, however, and she is ultimately persuaded to travel to London to take on the case as an observer.

Ed and Lorraine are now investigating the authenticity of the incidents in the Hodgson's house together with Maurice Grosse. They are now trying to communicate with Wilkins' spirit through Janet, hoping to speak to him and order him not to harass the family any further. Wilkins continues to insist that he owns the house and that they should all go. Parapsychologist Anita Gregory, who is also interested in the incidents, is skeptical. She doesn't believe in any supernatural happenings in the house and is convinced that Janet is just faking it.

One night after the Hodgsons and Warrens witnessed Janet's obsession again, Gregory presented video evidence from an installed camera showing Janet deliberately ravaging the kitchen. With this, Gregory intends to be able to prove her assumption that all events are only fictitious and that Peggy incited her children to do so. Ed and Lorraine are convinced of the alleged fraud, but Ed still wants to help the family. Peggy throws the researchers out of the house, disappointed, and the Warrens leave. However, Janet later assures her family that she was forced to get the researchers out of the house. Through tape recordings that Ed had recorded during the events in the house and is now evaluating during the departure, the Warrens recognize that the ghost of Wilkins is only a puppet and was manipulated to track Janet and to disguise that the real mastermind was the demonic Spirit from Lorraines visions.

Ed and Lorraine return to the Hodgson residence as soon as possible, where they find that the family has been locked out and only the possessed Janet remains in the house. During the current thunderstorm, lightning strikes a tree standing by the house. This kinks off and only the jagged, pointed stump remains, similar to the one that Ed impaled in Lorraine's vision. Ed is now trying to get into the house alone to look for Janet. He finds her standing by a window over the tree stump to jump down and commit suicide. However, he manages to grab her and hang on to the curtain before she falls, but both are too heavy and threaten to fall. Meanwhile, Lorraine remembers writing the demon's name in her Bible during a vision, which is Valak. She now fights her way through the house, reaches the room and is attacked by the nun demon who hurls her against the wall. She confronts Valak with his name in order to condemn him back to Hell. Janet's property is released and Lorraine can bring her and Ed to safety.

A text epilogue reveals that Peggy lived in the house for the rest of her life and passed away in 2003 in an armchair in the same place as Bill Wilkins 40 years earlier. After returning to the United States, Ed added the “Crooked Man- Zoetrope ” another element to the “Warren Occult Museum” near “April's Music Box ” and the showcase in which the “ Annabelle doll ” was enclosed .

The film ends with the Warrens dancing to Elvis Presley's " Can't Help Falling in Love ".

Development and history of origin

In July 2013, ahead of The Conjuring's regular release , Variety reported that New Line Cinema was in the early stages of development for a sequel, having received successful test screenings and positive reviews for the first film. In January 2015 it was announced that David Leslie Johnson had been hired to write the script for The Conjuring 2 . Johnson was supposed to revise and rewrite an earlier draft of the script by James Wan, which he had written with Chad and Carey Hayes. The film was to deal with the case of "Enfield Poltergeist", which occurred in the London Borough of Enfield from 1977 to 1979, when the thirteen and eleven year old sisters Margaret and Janet Hodgson reported ghost activity. Ed and Lorraine Warren themselves were only very sporadically involved in the investigation at the time, which is why the script had to be adapted accordingly to give them more space in the film and to portray them as the main actors. In addition, The Conjuring 2 should create a connection to the most famous case of the Warrens, " The Amityville Horror ", in whose investigation the Warrens were previously involved.

Reviews

Andreas Staben from Filmstarts.de awards 4 out of 5 stars and draws the conclusion:

"The highly emotional, effectively staged and very well played horror thriller is a successful continuation of the original despite its short lengths."

Christopher Diekhaus from Spielfilm.de awards 4 out of 5 stars and draws the conclusion:

"Visually appealing, atmospherically harmonious and sometimes surprisingly touching - if you ignore minor script weaknesses and somewhat clumsy computer effects, 'Conjuring 2' offers captivating horror entertainment."

- Spielfilm.de

Salih Yayar from Filmaffe.de awards 3.5 out of 5 points and draws the conclusion:

“CONJURING 2 cannot match the class of its predecessor. But he's damn close. It is very positive that the film does not try to copy or even surpass its first part. Much more, some storylines and the characters develop further. […] Why CONJURING 2 does not come close to its first part is quickly explained: It is the expectation that one automatically has after CONJURING - DIE HEIMSUCHUNG. While shock moments every minute and a wide variety of stylistic devices (wobbly camera, noises, action, expulsions) were used, CONJURING 2 is limited to atmosphere and story - real old-school horror. On the other hand, the makers have shown courage and pleasantly stand out from the typical wave of sequels. "

- Filmaffe.de

The film service is also overall positive and draws the conclusion:

"The technically and dramatically brilliant horror film skilfully plays in epic breadth on the keyboard of the ghost film genre and entertains exciting, admittedly without gaining new impulses from the subject."
