The Lok Sabha ( Hindi लोक सभा lok sabhā [ ˈloːk ˈsʌbʱɑ ] "People's Assembly") is the first chamber of the Indian Parliament . In the legislature it is on an equal footing with the second chamber - the Rajya Sabha . The exception is budgetary policy, in which the Lok Sabha takes precedence. If there are different voting results, both chambers will meet together - but since the Lok Sabha has more than twice as many members, it is in fact the determining force in votes.

The Lok Sabha Parliament building in New Delhi

The Indian constitution stipulates that the number of members of the Lok Sabha may not exceed 552, of which a maximum of 530 may be in the federal states and a maximum of 20 in the Union territories. The President has the right to directly appoint up to two MPs as representatives of the Anglo-Indian minority . Currently (since 1989) the Lok Sabha has 545 members and is therefore the world's smallest representative body in relation to the size of the population. 543 MPs are directly elected every five years in a simple majority vote in one-person constituencies (530 in the Indian states, a further 13 in the Union territories ). The Delimitation Commission of India sets the constituency boundaries at irregular intervals according to the population changes. The minimum age for the right to stand for election is 25 years.

Individual evidence

  1. Members bioprofiles: Birla, Shri Om. Lok Sabha website (directory of MPs), accessed on January 2, 2020 (English).
  2. The term "lower house" does not seem very appropriate for the Lok Sabha, as there is no corresponding "upper house". The Rajya Sabha is more similar in its functions to the German Federal Council than to the British House of Lords .
