The story of today's Viacom International Media Networks Europe begins with the launch of MTV Europe , the pan-European version of the US broadcaster MTV .

Today there are dozen of national TV channels under the brands MTV, VH1 , VIVA , Nickelodeon and Comedy Central . These are managed from London, but there are also sub-networks.

On September 15, 2008, MTV Networks International began broadcasting its high definition channel MTVN HD from its Warsaw headquarters .

In January 2009, the channels MTV Latvija and MTV Lietuva were merged with each other because the Baltic channels did not achieve enough audience ratings. On November 18, 2009 this channel was also discontinued, as was MTV Estonia . The station MTV Europe is currently broadcast in the three countries .

On September 1, 2011, the Networks set the TMF offshoot TMF UK & Ireland . The music channel was replaced by VIVA.

On September 16, 2011 it was announced that the business in Northern and Central Europe should be centralized. The children's and family program was designed from the Berlin office (Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, Kindernet). The MTV, TMF and VH1 channels were looked after from Stockholm; the local Comedy Central channels from Amsterdam. This change affected the channels in the Netherlands , Belgium , Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Finland , Sweden , Norway and Denmark .

Viacom International Media Networks changed its international structure in April 2016. The previous VIMN Northern Europe was dissolved and responsibility for the German business was assigned to the VIMN Southern Europe Cluster in Madrid.

effect

When it was launched in Germany, MTV Europe was the first pure TV music channel. For many young people, he embodied part of the connection to global pop culture. The first song was the video Money for Nothing by the British rock band Dire Straits (1985). This video was completely computer animated and was considered avant-garde. The fast and sometimes garish cuts of the music videos shown were style-defining and were referred to as the "MTV style".

MTV Networks Germany

MTV Networks Germany look after a number of German and Austrian broadcasters and report to MTV Networks Europe.

In 1999 MTV Central (today: MTV Germany) started on the satellite frequency of the discontinued children's channel Nickelodeon Germany . MTV Central had already replaced the English-language MTV Europe in Germany and Austria in cable and pay TV. Over the years, MTV Germany has succeeded in gaining market share in the German television market and closing in on the competition with VIVA Germany . In order to increase the pressure on VIVA, MTV Networks Germany started the mainstream channel MTV2 Pop in 2001 , which concentrated on the pop and dance division and was thus positioned directly against VIVA.

The MTV parent company Viacom has been owned by the former competing broadcaster VIVA since 2005 , which was then incorporated into MTV Networks Germany. After the takeover, the two MTV channels and the two VIVA channels were repositioned to complement each other. MTV Germany was supposed to get “edgy” and since then has had a program more geared towards the male audience. VIVA, on the other hand, was geared towards the target group of female viewers.

As a result of this reorientation, MTV2 Pop was discontinued and the children's channel Nick was restarted on this frequency .

In 2007 Comedy Central Germany started , which mainly consists of programs from the previous program window NICK Comedy . Comedy Central has shared a frequency with Nickelodeon since 2008.

On December 1, 2007, the pay TV channels MTV Entertainment and Nick Premium started , and in 2009 the toddler pay TV channel Nick Jr.

Since March 31, 2010, Nick Premium had the name Nicktoons and Nick the station name Nickelodeon .

Since January 1, 2011, MTV Germany is no longer broadcast analogue and can only be received digitally on pay TV.

From October 1, 2014, VIVA and Comedy Central broadcast on a common frequency (VIVA: 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Comedy Central: 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) , Nickelodeon, however, became a 24-hour again Program expanded. MTV was also only present as an HD-only brand from autumn 2014 , the SD version was discontinued without replacement.

In June 2018 Viacom announced that VIVA Germany would be discontinued at the end of 2018. The broadcast slot was taken over by Comedy Central, so that it then broadcasts again for 24 hours.
