The Victoria Cougars were a Canadian ice hockey team based in Victoria , British Columbia . The team played from 1971 to 1994 in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).

history

The Victoria Cougars were founded in 1971 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . After they had missed the playoffs in their first three seasons, they reached the WHL final for the first time in the 1979/80 season, in which they were subject to the Regina Pats . In the following year the Cougars were again in the final, but this time they beat the Calgary Wranglers with 4-1 wins in the best-of-seven series. This year, the British Columbia team also achieved a WHL record with 60 wins in the regular season. Subsequently, the Victoria Cougars could no longer build on this success, so that they missed the playoffs eight times in the following 13 years. They also achieved another league-wide record in the 1989/90 season, which is still valid. In 72 games, the Cougars won only five times and scored twelve points, which was the worst performance of the season by a WHL team.

Before the 1994/95 season, the franchise was relocated to Prince George , British Columbia , where it has since participated in the game operations of the WHL under the name Prince George Cougars .
