The district is enclosed in the west and south by the Selwyn District , in the northeast the Hurunui District borders and in the southeast the urban area of Christchurch City . A small stretch of coast in the east forms the natural border with the Pacific Ocean .
The southeast half of the district is characterized by the wide plain between the Waimakariri River and Ashley River . The northwest, on the other hand, is mountainous and is closed off by the Puteteraki Range , which is up to 1936 m high .
The largest city in the district is Rangiora with 15,821 inhabitants, followed by Kaiapoi with 9255, Woodend with 2679, Oxford with 1905 and Pegasus with 1050 inhabitants. All other places are below the 1000 inhabitant mark.
climate
The eastern part of the Waimakariri District lies completely in the slipstream of the western New Zealand Alps . With around 700 mm of precipitation per year, the part is comparatively dry. Precipitation between 800 and 1000 mm can be expected further to the west. The average daytime temperatures are between 20 ° C and 24 ° C in summer and between 0 ° C and 3 ° C in winter, depending on the altitude. The annual sunshine duration is between 2000 and 2100 hours.

The ten Councilors , together with the Mayor, form the District Council and are re-elected every three years.
Town twinning
Waimakariri District entered into a partnership with the Belgian city of Zonnebeke on October 5, 2007 . The district and the Belgian city share the painful experience of the First World War . 846 New Zealand soldiers were killed on October 12, 1917 in the Battle of Passendale , a district of Zonnebeke .
Infrastructure
Road traffic
The district is connected to traffic by the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which, coming from the south, crosses the district along the coast to the north. At Waipara, State Highway 7 branches off from State Highway 1 and runs through the Amuri Plain to the northwest over the New Zealand Alps to the west coast.
