The XTZ 750 Super Ténéré is a motorcycle model from the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha , which was built from 1989 to 1996.

The Yamaha XTZ 750 Super Ténéré is a travel enduro and based on the competition version YZE 750/850 T, which took the first three places in the Dakar Rally in 1991 . On the market, the Super Ténéré primarily competed with the Honda XRV 750 Africa Twin .

engine

The water-cooled parallel twin of the XTZ has a displacement of 749 cm³ and generates a nominal output of 51 kW (69 PS). The cylinder head has two overhead camshafts and two balance shafts. Each cylinder of the two-cylinder engine has three intake and two exhaust valves. The engine lubrication runs through a dry sump. The mixture is prepared by a double falling flow carburetor . When it was launched, the XTZ was the most powerful travel enduro in series production.

For Switzerland and Austria there were throttle sets to reduce the power to 50 HP (type 3WM) and for the limited driving license in Germany there are also various throttling options. In addition, the versions for Switzerland and Austria were given a different carburetor nozzle to make the engine suitable for crossing passes. The mixture was less rich, which also significantly reduced consumption.

Model history

In 1990 the XTZ 750 was revised. The passenger footrests have been changed, the battery charge regulator has been replaced by a component with larger cooling fins and the construction of the foot brake lever has been changed.

When the XTZ 750 Super Ténéré was withdrawn from the program in 1996, Honda had continuously developed and modified the XRV 750 Africa Twin . The XTZ, however, remained almost unchanged, so that it was no longer state-of-the-art at the time.

criticism

“Quite different with the Yamaha. Their broadly bulged tank forces the driver's knees fully into the wind - and possibly into the rain. Even the handlebar is above average at 820 millimeters. The Super Ténéré receives an additional minus for the far too soft rubber mounting of the handlebar. This makes precise steering with the Super Ténéré very difficult. "
