The 2006 New York Jets season began with the team trying to improve on their 4-12 record in 2005.

Offseason

On January 17, the Jets announced that Eric Mangini had been signed as head coach, [1] [2] following the departure of Herman Edwards to the Kansas City Chiefs. Mangini would become the youngest head coach in the NFL, turning 35 on January 19. Mangini's first order of business was to reorganize the coaching staff. Offensive Coordinator Mike Heimerdinger and Defensive Coordinator Donnie Henderson were both released from the Jets staff. Special Teams Coordinator Mike Westoff was retained. A full staff was announced on February 20. Linebackers coach Bob Sutton was named defensive coordinator and the team signed Jim Herrmann to replace Sutton as the linebackers coach. Herrmann was the defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan for twenty years before arriving in New York.

General Manager Terry Bradway announced that he was stepping down as Jets GM on February 7. Assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum was named the new GM on the same day. Bradway continues to be employed by the Jets organization as a scouting consultant.

The Jets moved quickly to get under the salary cap as they were over by $25 million. On February 22, tackle Jason Fabini, quarterback Jay Fiedler, linebacker Barry Gardner, defensive tackle Lance Legree, fullback Jerald Sowell and wide receiver Harry Williams, were placed on waivers. The team chose not to tender an offer to Mark Brown. Cornerback Ty Law also parted ways with the Jets, as the organization decided not to exercise the contract option to extend his contract through 2008. Running Back Curtis Martin agreed to an undisclosed restructured contract.

Pro Bowl Center Kevin Mawae was released on Sunday March 5th. Mawae disagreed with the assertion that his release was for salary cap reasons as his cut would only be a savings of $1.5 million, and felt that it was simply a change in direction for the team.[3]

The Jets also restructured the contract of Quarterback Chad Pennington. Pennington's contract was cut from a base salary of $6 million to $3 million. Pennington will be able to make back the $3 million through incentives. He also had to forfeit his $3 million roster bonus that was due at the start of free agency.

John Abraham was designated the team's franchise player. He would later be traded to the Atlanta Falcons involving a 3-way trade between the Jets, Falcons, and the Denver Broncos. The Falcons traded their 1st round draft pick (#15) to the Broncos for the Broncos 1st (#29), 3rd (#93) and 2008 4th round pick. The Falcons traded the #29 overall pick to the Jets in exchange for Abraham. [4] As a comparison, the Jets received less for Abraham (#29 pick) than they traded the previous year for Doug Jolley (#26 pick). To most Jets fans this was a sign of the same bad decisions in what was supposed to be a new era. In his 1st game for the Falcons, Abraham had 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles, while the lack of a game-changing defensive end was clearly evident on the 2006 Jets.

Patrick Ramsey was traded to the Jets on March 17th 2006 for this year's 6th round draft pick. Tight end Chris Baker, who became an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, re-signed with the Jets, his hometown team on March 24th. Andre Dyson was signed by the Jets on March 29th 2006 for a five-year, $11.5 million deal, including $3 million in signing and roster bonuses.

Other notable signings include linebackers Matt Chatham, a former New England Patriot, ex-Tennessee Titan Brad Kassell, ex-Pittsburgh Steeler defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen, another ex-Patriot wide receiver Tim Dwight, ex-Denver Bronco defensive tackle Monsanto Pope, ex-Buffalo Bill center Trey Teague, and ex-Arizona Cardinal Offensive Tackle Anthony Clement.

The club also signed former longtime Jets Victor Green and Richie Anderson. Both intend to retire in a Jets uniform. Kevan Barlow was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers for a undisclosed draft pick in the 2007 NFL draft.

On the eve of the Jets pre-season finale, they sent Quarterback Brooks Bollinger to the Minnesota Vikings for C.J. Mosley. Backup Tight End Doug Jolley was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for an undisclosed draft pick. The team also picked up Cowboys Tight End Sean Ryan for an undisclosed draft pick and claimed former Texas standout Sloan Thomas from the Titans.

2006 NFL Draft

As a result of their 4-12 2005 record, the Jets were granted the fourth pick in the first round of the NFL Draft, which was held on April 29 and April 30. When the Houston Texans announced they would take defensive end Mario Williams of North Carolina State instead of Heisman Trophy-winning running back Reggie Bush of USC, some observers felt the Jets should trade up to the second pick and draft him. However, it appeared that making such a trade would have been too prohibitive for the team, and Bush would be drafted second by the New Orleans Saints. Instead, the Jets decided to focus on their offensive line with the draft and took offensive tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson from Virginia. With their other first round pick, they took center Nick Mangold of Ohio State.

The Jets opened the regular season on the road with a 23-16 win against the Tennessee Titans on September 10.

Game Summary

In Chad Pennington's first start back from shoulder surgery that sidelined him in 2005, Pennington looked sharp passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns. The game started with both the Jets and the Titans punting away their first possessions. On the Jets third drive, Pennington and the Jets drove up the field to the one-yard line where Kevan Barlow ran it in for a one-yard touchdown run to cap off a 76-yard drive. After Tennessee quarterback Kerry Collins ran into trouble early, Titans coach Jeff Fisher replaced Collins with the number 3 overall pick Vince Young. Young initially looked good, driving upfield for 35 yards on 6 plays. However, on the seventh play of the drive, Young underthrew wideout David Givens resulting in Andre Dyson's first interception of the game.

Pennington and the Jets drove up the field for 75 yards on 9 plays, but would be denied another score on a Sean Ryan fumble. Kerry Collins would return to playing quarterback only to see his first drive back end in an interception by Andre Dyson. The Jets would drive up field for 36 yards resulting in a Jerricho Cotchery 8-yard touchdown reception from Pennington. Mike Nugent would miss the extra point attempt. Tennessee's first drive in the second half resulted in a Kerry Rhodes interception after Titans tight end Ben Troupe juggled the ball into Rhodes' hands. The drive would end after Kevan Barlow came just short of the first down resulting in an 18-yard Mike Nugent field goal. The Jets next two drives would result in Nugent missing relatively easy kicks of 34 and 30 yards respectively. The Titans would take advantage of Nugent's inaccuracy, driving down field for 80 yards on 9 plays ending in a Travis Henry touchdown run. With 6 points on the board, the Titans decided to go for a 2-point conversion to make it a one score game. Vince Young came in for the conversion, but threw an incompletion to Bobby Wade, only to be overturned by a Derrick Strait penalty. Getting another chance at the conversion, Kerry Collins returned and handed off to Travis Henry to cut the score to 16-8.

On the Jets next drive, the Tennessee crowd overwhelmed the Jets causing Chad Pennington to fumble at the Jets' one-yard line, which the Titans would recover. Travis Henry rushed for a one-yard touchdown run and the Titans successfully completed the 2-point conversion, tying the game at 16. Immediately following the touchdown, the Jets responded with a Justin Miller return to the Jets 42, then a Pennington 38-yard pass to Laveranues Coles, then finally a 12-yard touchdown reception for tight end Chris Baker. The Titans tried to respond with under two minutes left, and drove to the Jets' 8-yard line, but Collins threw an incomplete pass on fourth down, allowing the Jets to kneel down to secure the victory.

Week 2: vs. New England Patriots

1 2 3 4 Total
Patriots 7 10 7 0 24
Jets 0 0 14 3 17

The Jets suffered their first defeat to the Patriots 24-17 in their home opener at The Meadowlands. The game marked the first time that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick faced his protégé Eric Mangini.

Bad blood brewed between the two in the week before the game when the Patriots filed tampering charges against the Jets for former wide receiver Deion Branch. The Patriots stated that while the Jets had permission to negotiate a contract with Branch, any trade talks were to be solely between the teams. They claimed that because Branch and his representatives had knowledge of what was being offered in a trade, the Patriots' negotiating position was compromised. [5]

Game Summary

After both teams punted away their first possessions, the Patriots struck first rumbling down the field for 82 yards on 11 plays. Corey Dillon swept left into the end zone for the first score of the game. After stopping the Jets on the next drive, the Patriots drove down the field once again. The 87-yard drive was capped off by a Stephen Gostkowski field goal, which put the Patriots up by 10. The Patriots would continue to fluster the Jets offense stopping them on the next three drives. The Patriots would finish the first half with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady to rookie wide receiver Chad Jackson digging the Jets into a 17-point deficit. The Jets would continue to struggle in their first drive back from the half by failing to convert a fourth and inches play. With good field position, the Patriots would drive down the field for 45 yards leading to a Laurence Maroney touchdown run.

The Jets' offense would finally click on the next drive, as Chad Pennington connected with Jerricho Cotchery for a spectacular touchdown as Cotchery was seemingly tackled by two New England defenders, only to spring back up and run 71 yards for a touchdown. The Patriots challenged the play claiming Cotchery's knees were down, but under review the challenge was upheld as Cotchery had managed to stay up. Less than five plays later, David Barrett would pick off Brady at the 19-yard line giving possession back to the Jets. Pennington would get help from his receivers once again, this time Laveranues Coles would make his way through New England defenders for a 46-yard touchdown. The Jets would continue gaining momentum by recovering a Patriots fumble, and Mike Nugent would tack on a 42-yard field goal to make it a one score game.

However, the Patriots responded to the Jets' scoring outburst by conducting a lengthy drive late in the fourth quarter, shredding 8 minutes off the clock and causing the Jets to use all of their remaining timeouts. With just over a minute left in the game, the Patriots attempted a 29-yard field goal that would essentially end any chance of a comeback for the Jets. With the crowd behind them, the Jets' defense managed to block Gostkowski's kick and recover the ball at their own 9-yard line. Trying to manage time the Jets drove up to the 45-yard line with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Needing a touchdown, Pennington lofted the ball in the air downfield only to see it batted away, finally being intercepted by Tedy Bruschi, allowing the Patriots to take a knee to end the game. Afterwards, the Jets coaching staff was criticized for bad time management.

The Jets defeated the Buffalo Bills 28 to 20. The Jets improved to 2-1 and the Bills dropped to 1-2.

Game Summary

The Bills started the game with a bang when quarterback J.P. Losman connected with wide receiver Roscoe Parrish for a 51-yard score on the second play from scrimmage. On Buffalo's next drive, the Bills faked a field goal and place holder Brian Moorman attempted a shuffle pass which resulted in an incompletion. Pennington and the Jets struggled early against the Buffalo defense, punting away on all of their first quarter possessions. The tide began to change for the Jets on the Bills' next drive when Kerry Rhodes forced Losman to fumble, resulting in the Jets recovering the ball at the 44-yard line. Finally placing Buffalo in their own territory, The Jets were able to stop the Bills' offense on the next drive. With the help of Buffalo penalties, Kevan Barlow was able to put the Jets' first points on the board with his 3-yard touchdown run. Buffalo would regain the lead on the next drive from a 36-yard Rian Lindell field goal. In the Jets' final drive of the first half, Pennington used a no-huddle offense to connect with tight end Chris Baker for a 1-yard touchdown reception.

In the second half, Rhodes continued to harass Losman, forcing a fumble once again. This time, it resulted in a 32-yard touchdown return by Jets linebacker Victor Hobson. Two drives later, David Barrett would intercept Losman's pass intended for receiver Lee Evans at the 24-yard line. Buffalo would move within one score of the lead after a 28-yard Lindell field goal. The Jets would answer Buffalo's field goal with a Cedric Houston touchdown run to put them up by 15. Buffalo, however, would crawl back into the game after a 12-yard touchdown run by Losman, putting Buffalo down by 8. With 1 minute and 25 seconds remaining in the game, Buffalo would recover an onside kick at the 38-yard line. On 3rd and 13, Losman connected with Parrish for ten yards coming just short of a first down, forcing the Bills to try and convert on fourth down. Losman underthrew receiver Josh Reed, turning the ball over to the Jets, who took a knee to end the game.

Week 4: vs Indianapolis Colts

1 2 3 4 Total
Colts 7 7 0 17 31
Jets 0 14 0 14 28

The Jets suffered their second consecutive home defeat to the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts remained undefeated and the Jets dropped to 2-2.

Game Summary

The Colts' defense began the game with a bang, forcing a Jets' fumble to give the Colts excellent field position in Jets' territory to start the game. Dominic Rhodes would run for a touchdown to give the Colts the early lead. The Jets' chronic first quarter struggles continued in this game, as they punted their next two possessions away. Peyton Manning and the Colts would also be denied during the quarter, keeping the Jets in the game. In the second quarter, the Jets would start to show life driving to the 33-yard line when Chad Pennington connected with wideout Jerricho Cotchery for New York's first score of the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff attempted a risky onside kick which caught the Colts off-guard and was recovered by Kerry Rhodes. Using this momentum, the Jets would drive down the field for 57 yards and a Kevan Barlow touchdown. The Colts would answer using their final possession of the half to drive up field for a 2 yard touchdown by rookie Joseph Addai, the first of his career, to tie the game at 14-all.

After stopping the Colts defensively to open the third quarter, the Jets would drive to the 2-yard line before the Colts made a successful defensive stand, forcing a fourth and goal. Coach Mangini opted to go for it on fourth down instead of attempting a field goal. This time, the gamble would backfire as Pennington threw an interception in the end zone, Pennington's first regular season interception thrown inside the red zone. The Jets' 8:40 drive thus culminated with no points whatsoever to show for it. The Colts took advantage immediately and gained the lead after a Martin Gramatica field goal early in the fourth quarter.

The teams then traded scores afterward: the Jets on Barlow's second touchdown run of the day, and the Colts on a Bryan Fletcher touchdown reception. With 2:34 remaining, Jets cornerback Justin Miller returned Gramatica's kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown putting New York up by four once again and sending the Meadowlands into a frenzy. Manning, however, would remain unfazed, leading the Colts downfield and scoring on a quarterback sneak with 50 seconds remaining. On the final play of the game, Pennington threw a short pass to Leon Washington up the middle of the field at the Jets' 40-yard line. The Jets then made a desperate attempt to keep the ball alive by throwing several laterals in a situation obviously reminiscent of The Play. After several players advanced the ball to the Colts' 27-yard line, center Nick Mangold's fumble would be recovered by the Colts' Jason David, thus ending the game.

After a close loss at home to Indianapolis, the Jets flew to Alltel Stadium for a Week 5 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game marked Chad Pennington's first game against Jacksonville after injuring his rotator cuff against the Jaguars in week 4 of the 2005 season.

Game Summary

Starting the game with a no huddle offense, the Jets struggled early against the Jaguars' defense. On the 7th play of the drive, Brian Williams picked off a Chad Pennington pass intended for Laveranues Coles returning it to the 50-yard line. Pennington's protégé at Marshall, Byron Leftwich, managed a quick 50-yard drive resulting in a Maurice Jones-Drew touchdown run. After punting away their next possession, Leftwich and the Jags managed yet another successful drive resulting in a Fred Taylor touchdown run. The Jaguars potent running attack continued to fluster the Jets' front seven resulting in another Maurice Jones-Drew touchdown run early in the second quarter. On the Jaguars next drive, Bryon Leftwich would connect with tight end George Wrighster for a one yard score increasing the Jets deficit to 28 entering the half. After dominating most of the first half, the Jaguars continued to roll, getting 13 unanswered points in the second half. Pennington and the Jets failed to generate any offense leading to a 41-0 drubbing and dropping the Jets to 2-3. The lone bright spot in the Jets crushing defeat was Leon Washington's first 100-yard rushing performance in the NFL.

After an embarrassing loss to the Jaguars, the Jets looked for redemption against the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins entered the game dead last in the AFC east trying to salvage their season after high hopes of contending for a Super Bowl while the Jets looked to return to .500.

Game Summary

After stopping the Dolphins' offense, Chad Pennington and the Jets produced New York's first score of the first quarter during the 2006 season after a Mike Nugent field goal. Starting in place of the struggling Daunte Culpepper, Joey Harrington saw trouble early after underthrowing receiver Chris Chambers resulting in a Andre Dyson interception and overthrowing tight end Randy McMichael resulting in a Victor Hobson interception. Fortunately for the Dolphins, the Jets offense failed to get any points from their turnovers. On the Jets first drive of the second half, Mike Nugent would tack a 33 yard field goal giving New York a 6 point lead.Olindo Mare would get the Dolphins' first points of the day after a 21 yard field goal. On their next drive, Chad Pennington would connect with Laveranues Coles for a 58 yard touchdown giving the Jets a 13-3 lead. Pennington would connect with Coles once again on the ensuing drive giving New York a 17 point lead. Using a no huddle offense, the Dolphins answered the Jets with a Chris Chamber touchdown reception cutting the Jets' lead to 10. After successfully stopping the Jets, Miami was able to come within a field goal of the Jets after a Ronnie Brown touchdown run. The Dolphins were able to get possession with less than a minute remaining in the game but Miami would come short after Olindo Mare missed a 51 yard field goal resulting in a New York victory.

1 2 3 4 Total
Lions 0 7 3 14 24
Jets 14 7 0 10 31

Looking to build on the momentum of their win against the Dolphins, the Jets hosted the Detroit Lions on October 22. The Jets improved to 4-3 and the Lions dropped to 1-6.

Game Summary

The Jets started the game off with a bang by scoring their first touchdown of the first quarter in the 2006 season off a Leon Washington touchdown run. On their next drive, Chad Pennington hooked up with Justin McCareins for a 44 yard score. Detriot would answer in the second quarter after Jon Kitna hit Roy Williams in the endzone for a 22 yard touchdown. The Jets would regain their 14 point lead on a 3 yard Kevan Barlow touchdown run. In the second half, the Lions would pull within 11 points after a 25 yard Jason Hanson field goal. Mike Nugent would tack in a field goal of his own to put the Jets up by 14 again only to see the Lions climb back after a Kevin Jones touchdown reception. Leon Washington made it a two score game after his second touchdown of the game with 4 minutes remaining. Despite a Jon Kitna touchdown pass to Mike Furrey, the Lions would never get the ball back after that point, and the Jets ran the clock out to ensure the victory.

Week 8: at Cleveland Browns

Jets 3 0 7 3 13
Browns 3 7 10 0 20

New York Jets last-gasp rally falls short in loss to Cleveland Browns. The game also marked the first time Eric Mangini faced his friend and former mentor Romeo Crennel.

Game Summary

Following their home victory against the Lions, the Jets travelled to Cleveland Browns Stadium to meet the Cleveland Browns. In the first quarter, New York scored first with kicker Mike Nugent getting a 27-yard field goal. Cleveland would tie the score on kicker Phil Dawson's 47-yard field goal. The Browns took advantage of the Jets' porous run defense throughout much of the game. Browns RB Reuben Droughns got a two-yard TD run for the only score of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, things went from bad to worse for the Jets, as QB Charlie Frye threw a 30-yard TD pass to TE Kellen Winslow. Dawson later kicked a 21-yard field goal to put the Browns up 20-3. The Jets answered back when CB Justin Miller returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Nugent managed to kick a 47-yard field goal to put the Jets within a touchdown. After a defensive stand the Jets got the ball back and tried to mount a game-tying drive. On fourth down with just over a minute remaining, Chad Pennington lobbed a pass to tight end Chris Baker, which Baker grabbed, but fell out of the end zone as he did so, and the officials ruled the play an incompletion. Although the Jets couldn't challenge with under two minutes left, they were hoping for a review of the play due to Baker clearly being pushed out. However, the officials deemed that the play was not reviewable, allowing the Browns to hold on to the win, which dropped the Jets to 4-4.

Week 10: at New England Patriots

1 2 3 4 Total
Jets 0 7 3 7 17
Patriots 0 6 0 8 14

Looking to split the season series after a week 2 defeat against the Patriots, the Jets traveled to Gillete Stadium with their first victory against the Patriots after seven consecutive defeats. The win marked Head Coach Eric Mangini's first win against his former mentor Bill Belichick and the Jets improved to 5-4, one game behind the Patriots.

Game Summary

Coming off of their bye week, the Jets flew to Gillette Stadium for a rainy AFC East rematch with the New England Patriots. After a scoreless first quarter, the Pats scored first on kicker Stephen Gostkowski's 31-yard field goal. Afterwards, the Jets put together a 16-play drive, culminating with RB Kevan Barlow's two-yard TD run. The drive was the longest the Patriots' defense had allowed to that point in the season. Gostkowski gave New England a 21-yard field goal before halftime to cut the Jets' lead to 7-6. In the third quarter, another long drive for the Jets led to kicker Mike Nugent hitting a 34-yard field goal to help New York improve its lead. Meanwhile, Tom Brady had much trouble leading the Patriots downfield, as the Jets' defense repeatedly got to Brady with four sacks overall, and Brady's uniform covered with mud from the sloppy field.

With the score still 10-6, the Jets widened their lead with QB Chad Pennington completing a 22-yard TD pass to WR Jerricho Cotchery. The Patriots would try for a comeback, as QB Tom Brady led a 61-yard drive in a scant 31 seconds, ending with a 15-yard TD pass to wide receiver Reche Caldwell and a two-point conversion also to Caldwell, with just over four minutes remaining. New England would get the ball back with 1:08 remaining in the game, and Brady led the Patriots to the Jets' 45-yard with nine seconds left. However, on what would be the final play, the Jets sacked Brady to force a fumble as time ran out.

Week 11: vs. Chicago Bears

Bears 0 0 3 7 10

Game Summary

Riding high from their road victory over the Patriots, the Jets returned home for a Week 11 game with the Chicago Bears. Neither side was able to get much going offensively in the first half, as both teams' defenses played to form, forcing punts many times. The Jets were finally able to break through in the second quarter, reaching the Bears 5-yard line. However, their drive ended in disaster when Chad Pennington threw an interception to Brian Urlacher in the end zone as he tried to find tight end Chris Baker. Replays showed that wide receiver Laveranues Coles was open on the left side of the end zone, but Pennington didn't see him.

Starting the second half, the Jets attempted a surprise onside kick, but the Bears were able to recover anyway. The excellent field position let running back Thomas Jones single-handedly drive the Bears down to the Jets 2-yard line where kicker Robbie Gould hit a 20-yard field goal to give the Bears the first points of the game. The Jets tried to recover, but another drive into Bears territory resulted in another Pennington interception by Devin Hester. On the very first play of the fourth quarter, Chicago effectively put the game away when QB Rex Grossman completed a 57-yard touchdown pass to WR Mark Bradley. From there, the Bears' defense kept the Jets grounded the rest of the way. With the loss, New York fell to 5-5.
