The voiced lateral palatal approximant (a voiced , lateral approximant formed on the hard palate ) has the following phonetic and orthographic realizations in different languages :

Spanish [ ʎ ] : Corresponds to the digraph ll as well silbenauslautendem l before a palatal consonants. In many varieties with [ ʝ ] collapsed (see yeismo ) .
- Example: ll uvia [ ˈʎuβja ]

Italian [ ʎ ] : gl .
- Example gl i [ ʎi ], a gl io [ ˈaʎʎo ] (shown twice for gemination )

Portuguese [ ʎ ] lh
- Example: baca lh au [ bɐkɐʎaw ]
- Russian , Bulgarian and other Slavic languages : "soft L", written in Cyrillic as ль ( л + ь ), as a combination of л + palatalizing vowel (e.g. л я ) or as љ .
