Alberto García (athlete)
Alberto García Fernández (born February 22, 1971 in Madrid ) is a Spanish long-distance runner .
career
At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Stockholm in 1996 , Alberto García was sixth in the 3000 meter run in 7: 54.57 min . Two years later at the European Indoor Championships in Valencia he won bronze in a pure lane race in 7: 55.24 minutes behind the British John Mayock in 7: 55.09 minutes and his Spanish compatriot Manuel Pancorbo in 7: 55.23 minutes.
At the 1999 World Championships in Seville and at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , he was eliminated in the 5000 meter run . At the World Indoor Championships in 2001 in Lisbon he won bronze over 3000 meters in 7: 39.96 minutes behind the Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj in 7: 37.74 minutes and behind the Belgian Mohammed Mourhit in 7: 38.94 minutes, and at the world championships In Edmonton he was the best European over 5000 meters and fourth in 13: 05.60 min. In 2001 and 2002 he was the Spanish champion over 5000 meters.
In 2002 he won over 3000 meters at the European Indoor Championships in Vienna in 7: 43.89 minutes ahead of his compatriots Antonio David Jiménez and Jesús España , where España won bronze tied with the British John Mayock. At the Cross Country World Championships in Dublin he finished 17th on the short distance and won the bronze medal with the Spanish team on the short distance behind the teams from Kenya and Ethiopia. García confirmed his reputation as the best European 5000 meter runner at the European Championships in Munich . After a furious final sprint, he won in 13: 38.18 minutes ahead of the Frenchman Ismaïl Sghyr in 13: 39.81 minutes.
After García had set European indoor records over 3000 meters and over 5000 meters in the 2003 indoor season, he finished second over 3000 meters at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 7: 42.08 minutes behind the Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie in 7: 40.97 minutes. The IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Avenches Alberto García was positive for erythropoietin (EPO) tested and because of this violation of the doping rules banned for two years.
After this period he won silver behind the Ukrainian Serhij Lebid at the European Cross Country Championships in Tilburg in 2005 , and in the team championship the Spaniards won silver behind France. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 and at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , he was eliminated over 5000 meters in the preliminary run.
In December 2010, he was arrested in a raid in the wake of the Fuentes doping scandal, along with his fellow runner Marta Domínguez , his manager José Alonso , the sports doctor Eufemiano Fuentes and ten other people on suspicion of having been trafficking in doping substances.
Alberto García is 1.63 m tall and weighs 53 kg. He is trained by Arturo Martín and starts for CA Adidas.
