World Cup tournaments

1930 to 1974, 1978 and 1982

Angola was a Portuguese colony until 1975 , which only became independent in the course of the Carnation Revolution , and so could not take part in the first 10 World Cup tournaments. Since the Federação Angolana de Futebol was only founded in 1979 and accepted into FIFA in 1980, it was not possible to qualify for the 1978 World Cup. Angola decided not to take part in qualifying for the 1982 World Cup, also due to the civil war that followed independence . Unlike some players born in Mozambique , the other Portuguese colony, e.g. B. Eusébio , were part of the Portuguese squad when Portugal first participated in the World Cup in 1966 but no Angola-born players .

1986 in Mexico

In qualifying for the second World Cup in Mexico , Angola played the first World Cup qualifier on July 1, 1984 in Luanda and won 1-0 against Senegal . Since the second leg was lost 14 days later in Dakar with 0: 1 nV, it came to penalties. Angola won it 4: 3. In the second round Angola played against Algeria for the first time . In Luanda it was only enough to a 0-0 and in the second leg in Algiers Angola lost 3-2. Algeria then managed to qualify for the finals.

1990 in Italy

To qualify for the second World Cup in Italy , Angola had to face Sudan in the first round. Although it was only 0-0 in the home game, the second leg in Sudan was won 2-1. In the second round, Cameroon , which then caused a sensation in Italy, and Nigeria were stronger. Equal on points with Gabon , but with the better goal difference, Angola only finished third.

1994 in the United States

To qualify for the World Cup in the USA , the Angolans were drawn into a group with Zimbabwe , Egypt and Togo , which was assigned to the group for the Sierra Leone team , as they withdrew after the draw. Angola only won in Togo and drew at home against Egypt and Zimbabwe, but lost the away games there. The home game against Togo did not take place in the end because it was meaningless because a victory would have been of no use to either of them. Zimbabwe then failed in the second round to Cameroon.

1998 in France

The qualification for the second World Cup in France was only slightly better. Angola survived the first round with two wins (2-0 and 3-1) against Uganda . In the second round there were two draws against Cameroon , but in the end Cameroon had more points as Cameroon won all the other games, while Angola won the home games against Zimbabwe and Togo, but only played there. Angola was eliminated from qualifying without losing a game.

2002 in Japan and South Korea

In qualifying for the first World Cup in Asia, Angola beat Swaziland 1-0 and 7-1 in the first round. In the second round, Cameroon was stronger again . Only Zambia , Togo and Libya could be relegated to the places against which too many points were lost in the draw games. With only one defeat in Cameroon, Angola was eliminated as second in the group.

Angola was finally able to qualify for the second World Cup in Germany . The start was bumpy, however, because in the first round the first game in Chad was lost 3-1 and only thanks to the away goals rule the 2-0 in the second leg was enough to advance. In the second round, Nigeria , Zimbabwe , Gabon , Algeria and Rwanda were the opponents. In the end, Angola and Nigeria had 21 points, Nigeria had the better goal difference, but the direct comparison (1-0 and 1: 1) spoke for Angola.

In Germany, the team met the former colonial power Portugal in the first World Cup game in their history and lost 1-0 with a goal scored by Pauleta in the fourth minute, but pulled out of the affair better than the two with 0: 6 and 1: 5 lost friendlies that took place in 1989 and 2001. In the second game against Mexico , the first point win at a World Cup and against managed by a goalless draw Iran scored Flávio Amado at 1: 1 so far the only goal for Angola, nine minutes after he came on in the 51st minute. A € 100,000 house in Angola was awarded for this goal. The two draws were then too few to reach the round of 16, and so Angola said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 16 years.

2010 in South Africa

The qualification for the first World Cup in Africa was then again not made. In the second round Benin was surprisingly stronger and Uganda could only be relegated to third place due to the better goal difference, with Uganda losing 3-1 and the home game only ended goalless. Only Niger had nothing to do with the decision.

2014 in Brazil

The qualification for the second World Cup in Brazil then went even worse. While Senegal won the group with three wins and three draws, Angola was only third behind Uganda, ahead of Liberia . Senegal was then eliminated in the playoffs against Ivory Coast.

2018 in Russia

In qualifying , the team only had to intervene in the second round, which took place in November 2015. In the only pairing of two former African World Cup participants, South Africa was the opponent and Angola lost both games. Angola was the second former African World Cup participant to be eliminated.

• 2006: In the second group game against Mexico, André Macanga received the second yellow card and then the yellow-red card due to deliberate handball and was suspended for the last game against Iran. In this game, Zé Kalanga and Locô also received the second yellow card, but this had no effect due to the elimination.
