The Federal Garden Show 2009 took place from April 23 to October 11, 2009 in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state capital Schwerin and had 1.86 million visitors. The motto of the garden show was "Seven gardens in the middle". In contrast to the gardening and landscaping exhibitions held every two years in German cities in recent years, no previously unused or renatured areas outside the city center, but the area around the Schwerin Castle including the Burgsee and the western shore of the Schwerin Lake, were chosen as the central event location.

The local organizer company expected 1.8 million visitors to the BUGA 2009. The total budget was given as 74.5 million euros, of which 43 million euros went to investments. 39,500 m² of the 550,000 m² area were intended as exhibition space, of which the exhibition halls took up 4,000 m². The Schwerin BUGA 2009 closed with a profit of around 3 million euros. Since then Schwerin has experienced an increased investment volume, in 2010 for the first time since 1988 a population increase and a growth in tourism of over 8.3 percent (2013) compared to 2008.

For 2025, Schwerin was awarded the contract by the BUGA Society for another federal horticultural show, which will further develop the concept from 2009 and then, after the west bank, make the south bank of the Schwerin Lake more accessible to residents and visitors. A referendum on the election date for the 2017 federal election in September should decide on the orientation . Due to a lack of financial support from the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the high debt of the city of Schwerin, the plans for another federal horticultural show had to be abandoned.

Planning and awarding

As early as autumn 1997, the planning department of the city of Schwerin planned to apply for the Federal Horticultural Show 2005. The decision of the city council to apply to host the event in 2009 was made on September 12, 1998. The estimated cost of this was 150 million DM, of which the city had to bear a third. On April 11, 1999, Schwerin prevailed against eight other applicants and was awarded the contract for the BUGA 2009. The motto originally chosen for the garden show was “Schwerin in the mirror of the lakes”. The event, which according to the statements of the former building department of the city, Axel Höhn, should be “no ordinary flower show”, was linked to a long-term urban development concept.

The Seven Gardens

Castle lake shore and floating meadow

21st century garden

The garden of the 21st century comprised the area around the Burgsee and was the entrance and reception area of the Federal Horticultural Show. The lake was widened from April to August 2007 by dredging in a southerly direction. The main attraction was a seemingly "floating meadow" due to its location between a lake and a ditch and the rectangular shape with the straight bank edges. This is connected by a bridge to the square on the bank, which is geometrically planted with robinia .

On the south bank of the lake there is also a tram turning loop set up especially for the garden show, service facilities and a pillared hall.

Castle garden

The palace garden was the largest of the seven gardens. It stretched from the Schweriner and the Burgsee in the north to the Faulen See in the south. Centrally located is the cross canal in a line of sight to the castle. In the greenhouse garden, once designed by Peter Joseph Lenné in the style of an English landscape park , horticultural art from several centuries was shown. The theme of grave design and memorials, a hedge garden and a children's playground based on historical models were also on offer.

Orangery of the Schwerin Castle

Burggarten

The castle garden is located directly on the castle island, which is connected to the old town and the castle garden by two bridges. The design was based on the status of 1857. The central focus was the orangery of the castle. In addition, elements of English landscape gardens, Italian terrace gardens in the Renaissance style and rose gardens were on display.

Kitchen garden

The kitchen garden , surrounded by a brick wall , once provided the ducal kitchen with fruit, vegetables and citrus fruits. In winter, frost-sensitive plants were kept here in a warm and a cold house. In 2009 the kitchen garden was, among other things, the location for 20 hall shows. The latest cultivations of useful plants as well as vegetables, herbs, wine, berry bushes, fruit trees as well as climbing roses and potted plants were shown.

Riverside garden

Located directly on the lakeshore, the riverside garden was connected to the kitchen garden to the north and the natural garden to the west. In addition to an alternating pile area, this garden was a place that offered restaurants, a beach area, a play area and childcare. A pontoon bridge built especially for the BUGA created a connection to the garden at the Marstall over Lake Schwerin.

Natural garden

The natural garden was the easternmost part of the BUGA site. It stretched from the Great Crucian carp , a small lake, to the south bank of the Schweriner See. According to the organizer, there were only a few creative interventions in the area. The great crucian carp is a body of water in the advanced silting stage . It is surrounded by a strip of rocking bog, reed beds and alder forest strips.

In addition, the restrained cultivation of wet meadows and an orchid meadow were shown in the natural garden. There was also a playground, a children's farm and the so-called green classroom .

Garden at the stables

Garden at the stables

The area is characterized by the grand ducal stables with its classical facade. The northernmost garden in an open park landscape offered green areas as well as perennials, roses and alternating plantings as well as special themes such as dahlias. To the north is the city harbor, which was redesigned until August 2008, with a forecourt at the so-called bag , a bay on the west bank of Lake Schwerin. A 325 m long pontoon bridge connected the garden at the Marstall with the waterfront garden.

Logos and symbols

Mascot Fiete

In the logo, the Schwerin Castle with its towers is shown in green or blue, above which there are seven blossoms in red tones. The two-line lettering BUGA 2009 SCHWERIN , in a different illustration also BUNDESGARTENSCHAU 2009 SCHWERIN , has been placed under the lock . This logo was presented to the public in March 2006.

The logo originally used showed the city name SCHWERIN on a black background , in the middle a circle divided by a horizontal line, the halves of which were shown in blue and green, and the lettering BUGA 2009 below .

The event's mascot was Fiete , a red and green ladybug with the flowers used in the logo on its back. A jury of experts selected the name from 1323 proposals submitted in October 2007.

criticism

The tree-felling work carried out in the palace garden, among other things to restore visual axes, led to heated discussions before the Federal Garden Show about the compatibility of the event with nature conservation . For example, around 200-year-old linden trees were felled and replaced by young trees, and a drainage ditch was laid through a moor area around the Great Crucian carp . In addition, there were doubts about the financing of the Federal Horticultural Show, since the organizing city only has to pay for any losses generated, but not the garden associations involved in the organization of the horticultural show, which benefit financially from it. Plans for the continued use of the infrastructure built on the occasion of the garden show, such as the newly created Burgsee island, were also commented as impractical. Against all expectations, Buga Schwerin closed with a profit of around € 3 million.
