History and derivation of place names
Barley (old: Giureston 890, Gerustan ) is mentioned very early in the Werden levy register . Around 890 Thiatgrim and Redwin each had to deliver 15 bushels of grain, 16 denarii army shillings and two bushels of flour. The latter is said to have been a particularly valuable achievement, as grinding with hand mills was very difficult. The residents of Barley are said to have immigrated from East Frisia (source: Teachers' Association of the Diocese of Osnabrück 1905). According to H. Bahlow , the name is synonymous with garst = spoiled, rancid, lazy; compare old north. gerstr = putrid water, fallow water.
