Cadillac Tonneau and Cadillac Runabout , at the time of their production also simply Cadillac , later also called Cadillac Model A , were the first models built by the American automobile manufacturer Cadillac in 1903/04. The first Cadillac was an open four-wheeled two- or four-seater, the dimensions of which corresponded to today's Smart . The designation "Tonneau" referred to a removable attachment at the rear of the vehicle, which offered space for two more people behind the driver and front passenger; the two-seater parallel model without this attachment was called the Cadillac Runabout.
The tonneau was driven by a single-cylinder engine from Leland & Faulconer (type "Little Hercules"), which was placed under the left front seat and transferred its power to the rear wheels via a two-speed planetary gear . The body sat on a bent steel frame, the suspension took over two semi-elliptical leaf springs on the front and rear axles. The mechanically operated drum brakes, which acted on two wheels, were operated with the brake pedal.
The tonneau attachment was an extra $ 100; A rubber or leather hood with side skirts could be purchased for 30 or 50 dollars.
Tonneau and Runabout remained in production until 1904 and came in the first year of production to a number of 2497 copies (which Cadillac was the largest automaker in the United States); for 1904 no figures are available for the individual series.
The successor to Tonneau and Runabout was the Cadillac Model B presented in January 1904 .
