Camon is a French commune with 143 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ).

Camon is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).

geography

Surrounded by a meander of the river Hers , Camon lies on the easternmost edge of the Midi-Pyrénées region and thus borders on the neighboring part of Languedoc-Roussillon . The climate is influenced by both the nearby mountains ( Pyrenees ) and the Mediterranean .

history

According to unconfirmed tradition, Charlemagne had a Benedictine monastery founded here in the Hers river valley in 778. Handed down in writing that a stone building of the monks in 923 Monastery Lagrasse was built.
